Talking Yammy DM1000 into DAW for tracking??

I am a bit confused, but hopeful<g>. Is there a way to track from my DM1000 panel straight into Reaper (my DAW of choice) via Firewire? Will an mLan card allow the DAW to see up to sixteen outputs from the desk?

I am trying to avoid another piece of kit (an interface) between the desk and the DAW.

Help!

Thanks.

D.

The DM1000 has a couple of card slots in the back. You would probably have to get ADAT cards and some some kind of interface that has ADAT ins. Controlling DAW's should be easier since it has midi as well as usb.
Unless I'm missing something Yamaha doesn't make a firewire card for their mixers.

There used to be a 16I/O mLan card but it must not have worked very well. No longer made.

That mLan card often shows up on ebay, and tends to sell quite cheaply.

Problem is, does OS X or Windows support mLan? Were there Core Audio or ASIO drivers from Yamaha, and do they still work with modern OSes?

Not really my speciality, maybe there's still an mLan user group somewhere.

You could consider getting the Yamaha ADAT card and a Presonus Firestudio Lightpipe. I know it's an extra bit of gear, but on the upside, it makes everything compatible with other ADAT-equipped kit, plus it gives you a headphone output direct from your DAW.

Yes, there seems to be mLan drivers for OSX. Maybe that is the answer. My only other choice seems a move to a G5 tower and PCIe (MOTU 2408).

Sigh.

The other option is MADI - last time I looked into it, you could get more simultaneous I/O with a MADI interface...

Yes, but the MADI card for the Yamaha is insane money. And each card only handles 16 channels. MADI and the Yamaha boards do not go together well IMO.

I own three of their digital desks, but I'd be the first to admit that Yamaha have backed themselves into a bit of a corner. They really need to develop a more up to date I/O card format - something that's not restricted to 16 channels at 48kHz - but to do so they would need a whole new line of mixers. No sign of that yet.

Or a lightpipe interface like the Presonus. I have one, its small, and although the drivers aren't amazing (though I haven't yet tried the new release that came out a few days ago), it works. I think a move to a G5 tower would be a cumbersome move back to out-of-date technology.

But look into those mLan drivers... it would certainly be an elegant solution if it works, and as I say, I've seen those YGDAI cards go cheap.

Hi,

I have a setup I have used for years consisting of DM1000 connected to a G5 PowerMac thru two ADAT-MY16AT cards in the DM1000 (only using one of them at the moment but have two installed in the mixer to be able to input more than 16 channels if I want to) in the Mac I have a RME HDSP9652 Adat Ligtpipe card, it works very well and the RME drivers are rock solid, and the RME card output the ADAT signal straight from the inputs with "zero-latency" technology. It works like a old fashioned recorder setup, I record using the DM1000 to Logic on the Mac, and mix on the DM1000, but still have the editing possibilities in Logic If i need it.

cheers!
