Question mc930s or 4047s?

Hi,

I'll be recording a folk-type group shortly, using my edirol r44. My plan is a pair of main mics for the ensemble as a whole, and a vocals-only and instruments-only feed from the board. It's a big group for this sort of music, with 6-8 singers, piano, acoustic guitar, drums, percussion, cello, and recorder. They're not pros for the most part, and the music is very quiet.

The recording will be in a church basement, which I've never been in. But I assume that sound will be on the reverberant and unfocused side. As a result, I'm leaning towards the Beyers for the main pair, but I'd appreciate any opinions re a pair of AT 4047s instead (I'll be playing the drums, so I will not able to listen and adjust/experiment).

BTW, I also have a pair of Royer SF1s, but I've ruled those out because the music is so quiet.

Thanks!

Having used both as main pairs for small classical guitar ensembles, I'd go with the Beyers.

you've got 4 tracks to play with, so put up both pairs and see which one sounds better to you. let us know which pair you prefer.

I've found the Beyers to be pretty good on anything I've used them on. They sound real but they sound flattering on anything I've used them on. ATs tend to sound scooped to my ear. With the situation you've described (if I understand it right), I'd use the ATs as spot mics and mix as needed. Obviously. if you have time to try out a few different configurations, go for it.
