Talking HHB PDR 2000 and Sound Devices 788 t differences?

Just wondering what the differences are between these two machines? Especially preamp quality? For some reason there are loads of reviews of the 788 t but hardly any on the Portadrive.

Seen a few comments which seem to suggest the preamps on the Portadrive aren't all that good?! Quite surprising on a unit which is that expensive?? All reviews of the 788 t praise the preamps as being nice sounding and quiet.

Hasn't the PortaDrive now been discontinued?

Personally I would say the choice is really between the SD 788T and the Nagra VI - you choose the one that best does the job you want.

Tascam's new HS-P82 just started shipping. I haven't read any reviews. Judging by the features it probably also belongs in this category.

Probably, but I've seen a few Portadrives cheap second hand (about the same as the 788 t), so was wondering how they compared. Was ideally looking for more than 4 channels, so not sure about the Nagra VI (6 channels would probably be enough with a small preamp, but prefer to take less extra items).

Are there any other high end recorders with more than 4 preamps? Thanks!

Didn't see you post before I sent the other one, yeah the Tascam recorder looks great, thanks. Wonder how the preamps compare to Sound Devices/Nagra...

Good place to check for the battery powered boxes:

Personally I would not buy a PortaDrive now - mainly because of long term support.

Nagra is introducing an external mic. per. of the same quality of those in the Nagra VI at NAB if you want to go that route - otherwise, I would say, that the 788T is definitely the best choice if you want to keep it small.

Otherwise - there is still the Aaton Cantar.
