Hello! Does anyone have any tips on places to record vocals? My apartment is surrounded by too many neighbors and I no longer have a practice space. I'm working on an album where I track all the instruments myself and the last thing I need are the vocals. I don't have the money to go to a studio. I'm just looking for a quiet place where I won't disturb anybody. Can anyone help me!? Thanks! Glenn |

"Too many neighbors"? - Do you mean that your neighbors are too noisy to get a good vocal recording? or do you mean that you cannot make too much noise because of your neighbors? Part of the answer depends on your recording set up. If it is something that can be mobile, then there are lots of possibilities. Local churches, pretty much anywhere you can find that is quiet enough for you to do your thing. If your set up is not mobile, then you could always bounce your tracks and take it somewhere that will work for you. If you are worried about bothering your neighbors, I think you could get away with doing some vocals in a closet or a bathroom, or anywhere else really. Vocals shouldn't really bother your neighbors, unless you are doing a lot of screaming or something. You might get some better responses by giving a little more info. |

Thanks for the response! I have 2 neighbors each side and one above who is pretty loud. I just don't want to disturb anyone. I don't scream but it can get loud. I have a Korg D3200 so I can take that anywhere. I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem and if they go anywhere in particular. I never thought about the church idea! Thanks!

No problem. Churches are great for things like that. Usually the people you need to ask are nice, and as long as your lyrics don't contain a lot of blasphemy or offensive content, then you should be okay. Otherwise, if you have any friends, go to their house. Other free options might include anything like - if you are in any kind of club or group that meets in a place that you might be able to use. friends or your places of business that will let you use space after hours or something like that. |

I live in a house that is on the main drag through the barrier island here in Florida. I have another house that I bought to rebuild. The rebuild is done and the house is on the market (wanna buy a house in Florida?). The house is totally empty and, having travertine stone floors is quite loud. I recorded a song there using the 10'x10' master walk in closet as a recording booth. First went the drums, then the banjo and bass tracks, then the vocals. All were recorded in the closet. I bought some masonite 4'x8' panels at Home Depot and attached a bunch of comforters to those. I then attached the panels to the walls in the closet and put an additional comforter on the floor. It all turned out "ok" considering. Some pix of the setup are here: recording_room Photo Gallery by Richard King at pbase.com |

If you're at all crafty, any closet that you can comfortably stand in can be converted into a vocal booth. Just line the walls with any material that might help. Some of that 2" foam insulation can go a long way towards isolating sound and, in a pinch, those $10 foam mattress pads from Walmart cover a good bit of wall space and work wonders for dampening. It might be worth the investment, especially if you plan on cutting another record at home in the future. |

Yeah, I might also suggest a closet. and since it is just vocals so you won't need much room, you can keep some of the clothes, etc. that you have in the closet to help with some of the dampening. There is nothing weird about a guy singing in a closet. |
