Talking Forrest audio samples recorded with the Aurora GTQ2 / B&K4006

Hi Guys,

I was last week at Amptec in order just to buy some cables and some mic stands however after some talks about mic pre-amps they gave me an Aurora GTQ2 to try in order to see if it would suit me for Classical music recordings. Now at the moment I am in Belgium and have no concerts to record so I tried to record some vocals and guitar however these were close miking techniques and even they sounded great it is still hard to see how the mic pre amps act in a far field situation. So I decided this morning to setup an AB mic config with B&K4006 in my garden and had these hooked to the GTQ.
I used the HPF and toke out the low frequencies in order to avoid wind noise and rumble etc. When playing back the recording I was amazed about the sound field/panorama/3D have the feeling the sound of the birds are all over even behind. Please have a look at the pictures and listen for your self and tell me what you hear (btw a Cesna is flying over my house )

NOTE: the Gain is all the way up (see pictures), and still sounds clean and fine i.e. no added noise.

That sounds really nice to me, those mics are omnis right?
Its nice & clean with a good stereo image. I think I hear crows, pigeons, and blackbirds & a propellor aeroplane

and best of all, no traffic noise in the background!

"toke out the low frequencies"

nice stuff! I find it actually quite fun to do this stuff, if I can find the time maybe I'll find one of mine and post it.

If anyone is selling a pair of 4006s, shoot me a note...

Great sample. On headphones the plane definitely sounds as if it's overhead. Don't know that's a psychological thing or what. Really convincing though.

I did a similar recording with a pair of MKH8020, similar effect.

My house is also out in the forrest. My plane passing by was a big jet though but very realistic outside-of-the-head feeling as well. Actually these types of recordings give such life like results sometimes that I have to press pause or take the HD600's of to see if it's a live sound or recorded.

Very cool indeed!

Okay the recording is very cool, but the view from your studio is AMAZING! What I would give to live in an area like that. People think I am lucky to live in SOCAL, but the place is really just an overcrowded desert with smog and earthquakes.

Check how close you came to binaural recording.

Great sample. Did you experiment with the distance between mics? Or swap the GTQ2 for another pre to compare?

I used the 2882 as converter, the mic spacing was 38cm. I have tried on several occasions recording the forrest behind my house and used Amek DMCL, Paintpot, Nagra LB, Korg MR 1000 and used also the DPA4060 but never experienced the sound as I do now with the Aurora. Would be surprised if it's the pre-amp only.
