A friend needs a mic for trumpet, what are the possibilities? (I think we can roll out any non-clip and really expensive solutions, because he's not gonna buy it). But still, what do you use? Thanks. (BTW I've searched, but there are debates mosly about ribbons etc...) |

easy solution is to just stick an sm57 or beta57 in front of it look at the beta98, comes in several mounting options |

Can't remember the particulars, but I remember Brad Avenson mentioning a clip-on in a conversation at the Gearslutz AES dinner (someone else's make, not his, IIRC). Could try PMing him to see what it was. Peece, T. Tauri |

I have been using an AKG C418 on my violin for live sound. I havn't heard of these SD people. They seem like they are probably better. The sound on my violin is not incredible, but better than any piezo pickup system I have used. Compared to the SDs it is much cheaper as I only paid $150 for it. It is actually a drum mic, so it should have no problems with high spls. They mention trumpet as a potential use for it on their webpage, and I have lent it to friends who have used it on clarinet, trombone, and shawm, and it actually sounds much better on those than it does on my fiddle. I have compared it to other clipon mics designed for the violin, and the advantages are that it is cheaper and very feedback resistant, even though the sound is not quite as good. (it has a really tight spot.) The feedback resistance is a big selling point for me, as many of the places I wind up playing in have such mediocre pa's and room acoustics that the diffference between this and a much nicer clipon wouldn't come through in the sound anyway. hope this helps. |

I use a Beta 98 with the ULX wireless system on my sax, and have come across a very large number of trumpet players using the same set-up. I strongly recommend wireless for a live situation unless the trumpet player is going to be sitting down, or going the expensive route and using a stand mounted mic ( KSM44, 414, or M147 is nice!!!!). If engineer is worth more than 2 cents, all you really need is an SM57 or Beta 57 on a stand. Rob |

Oh, I forgot..... In response to the person using the Samson Airline System; the mic is fine, and if you are playing a small venue, and only small venues you should be ok. However, don't get into a situation with other musicians playing wireless as well, or a medium to large sized venue. I say this not to trash a lower cost setup but to maybe stop some headache. There is a large probablity for interference in that system. Be careful!!!

RMJAZZ everything you said is right on the money my advise to anyone using anythign wireless is be carful of the wireless system and ALWAYS have a wired alteritive and set it up. the number of times wirless fails it just rediculus and just because it worked at sound check doesnt mean it will work during the show. |

A friend of mine that tours heavily uses the same B98 w/ ULX wireless that I do, and sets up an RE20 just in case. You make a good point Aussie Techie
