Talking Big Band session @ Clinton

I produced a big band recording last Wednesday at Clinton in NYC.

The bandleader wanted to go for a classic Columbia 30th street/Capitol tower type sound.

So, this is what we did.

Saxophone in circle around a U47 on omni.
3 Trombones 2-Coles 4038
4 Trumpets 2-coles 4038
I also flew a U67 over the tpts and tbns. I may favour these mics in the final mix and use the Coles only as solo mics.

Drums, AKG C12 as main mic for the entire set. On sn/hh some kind of Schoepps and a 47 fet on the bassdrum.

Bass, Beyer 260 and Schoepps sdc.

piano, M49

No Headphones or iso-booths except for the singer, and he's not on every tune.

here are some pics.Log in | Facebook

Clip? I need to mix the thing first. I'd like to find a studio with a tube console and a 1/2" Ampex 350 or 351. If I can't find that, I'd like to try this place: Fluxivity.com

Clinton has an EMT plate, so I used it for the brass and drums and I printed the return. In the mix, the brass and drums will be in the right channel. I will return the EMT to the left channel. I'll put the saxophones on the left and return the reverb to the right. No reverb for bass or piano.

When we tracked the band, I made some live mixes to 2 tracks of Pro-Tools, so when I get the tracks, I'll post something. My engineer, bil emmons, has the hard drive.

I love the big band sound. I really liked Mulligan's big band, and others. I am looking forward to hearing your samples.

Yes that sounds super legit.

Especially this part:

No Headphones or iso-booths

And this part:

3 Trombones 2-Coles 4038
4 Trumpets 2-coles 4038
I also flew a U67 over the tpts and tbns

Would love to hear how it comes out. Who was playing in the big band?

I produced 2 of Berger's past big band albums. "The Harlem Nutcracker" and "Doin' the Do".

BTW, my own big band CD will be out in September. I recorded that one at Sear sound in NYC.

Doesn't Walter still have a tube console tucked away somewhere?

Yes, but it's in Sear studio D. I suppose I could mix in there.

BTW, Walter is in hospital. I think he fell or something. I'll get a report soon.

Big Reds? I don't think so. He only has stupid speakers like Genelecs and NS10s. Systems Two in Brooklyn has Big Reds in the control room.
