Talking I dont actually do any recording, i just buy gear...

well, that is not exactly true, but so far this year, i have picked up a pair of neumann km140s, a pair of DPA 4061s, a pair of yamaha HS80M's, and (finally) paid for a commercial license for Reaper (after "evaluating" it for only 121 days). i am very happy with all of the items. i am starting on a new CD project for the flute/harp duo, RoseWynde.

so, have youse guys bought anything new, and was it what you thought you were buying/wanting/needing or was it a waste of good money? anything that took you a step closer to classical nirvana?

my next purchase will be an auditorium.

Just bought a Mytek Stereo 192ADC to fill out an extra digital channel on my interface, reclocked my whole system to it, sounds freaking fantastic. I bought a refurbished unit on ebay from Mytek, there was a problem with it, so they shipped me a brand new one. How is that for customer service. Also bought a Steinberg MR816X, still wating for my rebate. Once I sell my old interface, I figure I could break even. It sounds great, but it is glitchy as hell and the preamps are a little noisy at higher gain setting. If I had to do it again, I probably wouldn't buy it.

Next purchase...Josephson C617's. Just getting the courage to spend that much money and figuring out how I am going to pay it off. Luckily business has been good lately.

I try to buy gear only when I need it. I am not an impulsive shopper....usually...

I've only purchased a Sony M10 recorder this year, and that was largely on principle, to mark the end of a long Sony road through MD starting with their very first model. I've yet to use it in anger. Or even change the batteries which seem to be eternal even if I never actually switch the thing off.

I'm broke... can't afford to buy anything right now...

But when I fill my pockets... I'm thinking an API 512C!

Let's hope for some better times!

I figured he wouldn't mind the noise, because if he did,
instead of the auditorium, he would be buying an anechoic chamber.

But you do have a point.

My third pair Schoeps???

Will post some pics when I get them. I have quite the little family now...

All I need now is a pair of MK21 and MK41 and I'll be done. Well at least for the short term.

I'm selling everything
I'm selling 3 CCM21lg, 3 CCM5lg, 3 Brauner PhantomV (best most useful mic I have ever owned) 3 Beyer M260 and a pair of matched Valvets (see Didier.Brest shoot out) Shameless plug but it fits the post
The CCM have the same specs as the CMC bodies but you can't change capsules or fit a pad or filter between the capsule and the body, I've never needed to even for drum OH.
Shoot me please someone

You need someone to talk you out of it. Selling your stuff really is the worst way to make money. It is the easiest way, but nothing worth while is easy.

Just a Fostex FR2LE this year, because I was tired to mount the PC, interface etc. for all my concerts stereo recordings.

A new PC; does that count? And a copy of the new Samplitude 11. This is a low-profile year. There is a lot of stuff out there I would like to buy, like the Shure ribbon mic. But I just do not need that new ribbon mic. And I would need a pair anyway.

So far I bought an MCU extender, and upgraded from Cubase Studio 5 to Cubase 5. I also just bought some wood to make a new studio desk to house the MCU plus extender. I really need a new truck so gear purchases will be on hold for awhile unless....

Did you compare the AD converters of the MR816 with the ones of the Mytek? I just have got the M816. The noise should not be an issue for mic sensitivity above 10 mV/Pa. It's definitely one with ribbons. Not surprising according to the -118 dBu EIN figure in the specifications which are in the operation manual to be downloaded from Steinberg's web site. I'm happy with it because I found it sounding better than the Fireface 400 while it is less expensive and have 8 preamps instead of 2.

In January I added a new AMS-Neve 1073 from Vintage King in Vintage King rack and Lexicon PCM92 reverb. Waiting for new SADiE Native version out soon. Other than that I've been cleaning the closet and moving out doo-dads and thingamajigs.

sold this year:
Tascam 1000 dvd-r recorder
KORG 1000 dsd box
AMS-Neve 1073 DPD

on the purchase list:

?? who knows
maybe another baby Mackie for headphone feeds and such.

I did, they compare quite well actually. Hard to do an accurate comparison because the analog in's always go through the MR816's preamps (unless you do the whole unbalanced insert thing). Mytek's clocking is definitely better, and the MR816's sound improved when externally clocked, but the sound of both are similarly detailed, transparent, and of high quality.

If only they would get the stupid thing stable on Win 7 for people who don't use Cubase.

I am waiting for that too. They said the end of March, and by my calendar, it is the 31st.

Forssell SMP-2
Forssell MADC-2
Sound Devices 702
Crowley & Tripp Ribbon mics

Not quite Nirvana but very nice and useful:
Shure KSM141 pair.

Last year, after asking guys on this forum about ribbon mics, I put my toe in the water by buying a Fat Head II with the Lundahl transformer. The mic is much better than I expected so I'm toying with the idea of adding two more ribbons, an R84 and maybe something else, if I find a buyer for my pristine KM184s this year.

Last year I also augmented Samplitude by picking up the Sonnox EQ. It was a very good purchase.

My advice is find a solid engineer in your area and start cooridinating gigs for them to use your gear. Take 15% of the bookings and call yourself a manager. The gear you've bought is great. Use them to actually produce and record solid end results.
