Talking Cool Jazz & new mic's!

Time for something completely different, as Monty Python used to say. Enough doom and gloom from yours truly. This is "Land of the Midnight Sun" played at the Arbor's Records 2010 invitational in January, with Bob Wilbur on clarinet. It was mixed live, using our traditional array of DPA mic's on stage, but the stereo sound field was captured by a new player from Joe Grado: The HMP-1. The Joseph Grado HMP-1 Recording System Half of the sound you're hearing is the pair of HMP-1's in front of the stage!

Thanks

mike - i assume you mean dpa 4061s on flute and clarinet?

where did you get the grado HMP-1 mics? how much do they cost? what kind of set up did you use with the grado's? website indicates the grado mics are 2mm omni capsules - what about self noise?

Nope. 4016 HV wide cardioids.

We got them from Joe himself as a pre-production demo set. The pair retails for $5K. They were pointing straight up on stands about 3ft. in front of the stage, spaced about 25ft. apart. They are a tiny bit noisier than larger capsules, but listen to the recording. Unless I solo'd them at extremely high gain, I couldn't hear anything.

Holding a Grado HMP-1. This is a pre-production unit with no anodizing.

Very nice sound! (And music also by the way.)

Judging the mics without any reference from these musicians and this room is impossible to me. Could you make a recording both with a pair of DPA omnis and these ones ?
How do you place the 4041s on the piano?

Losing your hair will do that to a person! Damned genetics! I am, however, in excellent shape for my age, sir.

You look like James Lipton. isnt the hair, more the seriousness in the face.

Hello Mike,

Nice sound & vibe!

What is the effective difference betwen the HMP-1 and an usual AB with SDC omnis? It's not entirely explained on Joseph Grado's site... what do you think about it from your experience?

I'm curious to read your thoughts.

all the best,
ave.
