oye - time to buy some better monitors, and while my heart tells me to splurge, my wallet says something entirely different... i have a powered subwoofer that i can couple with the new monitors, but would prefer not to use a sub. anyway, lots of folks seem to like the yamaha hsm50s, and perhaps the krk vxt4s, but adams always gets the nod for accuracy, though much more spendy, like twice as much as the yammys. what say you? are the hsm50s good enough or is it worth it to scrape up the moolah for the adams? danke.

I have a pair of the yamaha's. They need a sub. Though with one, I think they do the job of a 5" nearfield better than almost anything else. You need to work to make it sound good, and they translate perfectly to any consumer sound system. I would say if you are going with an Adam speaker. A larger model as mains are the way to do. |

You might look for a pair of used Tannoy System 800A (powered) or System 800 (passive) speakers. (Tannoy SYSTEM 800 - Passive Studio Monitors - eBay (item 230447372068 end time Mar-16-10 12:47:51 PDT)) Put these with a really clean, quiet 200w/ch power amp, and you might be real happy. I bought a pair of 800A with the matching 10" Tannoy powered sub and have eliminated most of the problems in the classical stuff I do in video edit. They're not real sexy, or real "pretty" sounding... but they are dang accurate... and for $800 I'm convinced I could not have done much better. Still waiting for that killer deal on a pair of B&W Matrix 801 Series IIIs... Whatever you do... listen before you buy. Preferably in your environs... I know Guitar Center makes everything homey and all... but...

i only really listened to yamaha hs50s once, at my friend's house, but they have just like NO bass whatsoever. sure people can criticize other speakers for "hyping" the bass, but in my opinion, you need something, even if it's a ported exaggeration of what might be in the bass. I would go for the Adams, VXT4s, JBL LSR2325s, KRK Rockit 5s, Mackie MR5s anything over Yamaha HS50s any day. HS80s on the other hand I think are great and probably one of the best speakers for the money. YMMV |

The hsm50's ARE light on bass, but with a bit of practice, I've gotten fantastic results. for around $380 when I bought them, I'm very happy. The above poster was right, though - the hsm80's are the way to go if you can afford them. -Matt |
