Talking altiverb vs SIR or reverberate?

all three are convolution reverb plugins. do they sound any different if they are using the same IRs?

is the benefit of altiverb over the others just due to the quality of the IRs that you get with altiverb? if this is the case, could someone please post, or send me, one of the IR wave files that come with altiverb (perhaps a medium chamber or something suitable for chamber music) so i can try it out in SIR to see if altiverb is something i might want to purchase just to get some better IRs than i currently have? (i have the bricasti IRs, plus stuff from TC 6000, lex 480 and 960, and EMT 252, but so far nothing really sounds quite right...)

how does altiverb compare with medium priced hardware boxes like the TC M-One XL?

thanks.

All the IRs you listed are taken from hardware boxes. Altiverb comes with a lot of those, but I agree none of them sound quite right. What you really want is Altiverb's huge library of acoustic spaces.

even altiverb doesn't quite "nail it". I own altiverb and have used SIR quite a bit too.

Sir has thousands of options, I believe many more than altiverb? (been a long time since I looked at either of them since I record primarily rock n roll now and have no use for those types of reverb )

SIR is just as competent, and priced way better. truth be told I took the advice from someone on another forum and confined myself to 6 basic reverbs, adjusting the parameters to taste..otherwise there were way too many options, and things got cloudy real quick.

when it came down to it, none of them came close when compared to a hardware unit. (I used the sony DRE(borrowed) ).

I came to the same realization myself. I basically just use the standard reverbs in Samplitude and variverb and have found it's more useful to learn how to adjust and apply them (wet, dry) than wasting time with thousands of pre-sets. Find one that sounds good and don't over-do it is the way I basically approach it now.

I've just downloaded HybridReverb which looks like an interesting new take on convolution-based reverb..

"HybridReverb2 is a convolution-based reverberation effect which combines the superior sound quality of a convolution reverb with the tuning capability of a feedback delay network. The sound quality of a convolution reverb depends on the quality of the used room impulse responses. HybridReverb2 comes with a set of room impulse responses which were synthesized with tinyAVE, an auralization software which was developed at the Institute of Communication Acoustics, Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Borß and Martin, 2009; Borß, 2009a). These room impulse responses are designed for a speaker setup with two front and two rear speakers (Borß, 2009b). For a full surround sound effect, you will need two plugins, one plugin which uses a "front" preset for the front channels and a second plugin which uses the corresponding "rear" preset for the rear channels.
