Talking Stereo XY & Apogee Duet

Anyone here use (or ever used) an Apogee Duet for on-location recording?

I know the set-up's not much, but I figure that the Duet with two BAD ASS condenser mics, and an XY mic holder would get the job done rather well.

Mostly, I record bands around my area for their ears only... tracks usually end up on a fagspace page or what not. Right now, I use a Zoom H4 (built in mics) and I believe the Duet to be a very, very welcomed upgrade.

Could anyone recommend a pair of good condensers. When NOT being used for recording on-location, they will be used to track music I'm involved with into Logic Pro 9.

I play drums, so they will also double over as OH mics. I'll probably use the Recorderman method to record those boogers.

Bleh, sorry for the wall o' text but I'm about to go spend some money and I'd like to be able to hand that paper over with conviction... AND a smile!

Thanks (again) slutz!

Found what I (think I) am looking for:
Duet + matched Oktava M012s

/thread (unless someone has something to say about the mics!)

You might listen to a Rode NT4 (two cardioid elements in fixed X/Y, powered either 9v - like for direct into a Zoom or Edirol R-09 - or phantom). It has a decent sound, with a -4dB cut beginning at 200Hz. That might help in a club or concert where the bass energy is more for physical effect than musicality. It also images as a single-point overhead very nicely, and requires only one boom stand.

I use mine for single-stand battery-powered quick-o with the Edirol, and for overheads on location.

Thanks for the words, hp!
Those M012s have a 10dB pad on them. Not too sure if this is the same thing as you're talking about. I'm just looking for something that's small, and powerful. This will be mostly for personal use. Recording bands is just something that happens as it does, it is not the PRIMARY use for this so I'm not too worried about how the mics will react at a club with little acoustic treatment!

The NT4 has a cut to reduce the bass from overwhelming the track or is it a pad as well? If it IS just a cut, that's incredibly nifty. Thanks for the suggestion, again mate.

I think you'll be happy with the duet.
I haven't used the Oktavas but there seem to be a lot of satisfied users around here. The other mics you might consider are Little Blondies, omni SDCs custom made by the gearslut named 'sahiaman' - great value, great guy.
I've barely used my rode nt5s (same capsules as the nt4 stereo mic mentioned above) since I got a pair. People rave about them as drum OHs. There are some clips posted on this thread...http://www.gearslutz.com/board/so-mu...ondie-mic.html

Just listened to few of the clips posted in that thread, and those little bastards do sound pretty good. Unfortunately, I didn't dig around the thread a whole bunch... so all I really heard were clips of acoustic guitars. I'm about to go look through it some more, I'd really like to hear someone using two for drum OHs.

Thanks (again) for the words

There are a bunch of overhead clips on pages 6-9. Someone needs to compile all the clips of them in one post.

Got it figured out now, without question ().
I believe that the Duet and a pair of those Blondies will treat me right for the time being! I'm sure once I get more inputs, I'll be getting more of those Blondies.... those things are very, very sexy.

Thanks all, for the help!
