I've had 2 small local churches hire me to just setup a recording system that one of their own people could run in order to make CDs.
There's alot of easy quick money to made helping these small and medium size churches with their sound needs.

I've never made a living in recording. My field is real estate and construction.
That's so bad I had to go get a part time job at Home Depot.

As a Catholic I can't help but get pissed when people post about the scandals going on right now as an argument against religion.

The actions of a few do not reflect on religion itself. Rather, it reflects on the hearts of those who actually performed the actions. Please don't confuse religion itself with the actions of a few. They will get their just rewards, etcetera. Also, not one can say they are not guilty of wrongdoing, and furthermore there are plenty of heinous crimes committed everyday by people not in the church, but of course no one cares because it doesn't involve one of the largest institutions in the world.

ANYWAY, off the soapbox, back to your regularly scheduled program.

(perhaps all religion-only posts should be deleted?)

We have the technology to go back to the OP without deleting anything.

It's just up to us to make it so.

I know what you mean. My dad's an architect but has been out of work for several years now. After hundreds of applications and resumes he finally got a job at Target. About a month later he realized that the cost of getting to work (would have had to buy a car since my parents share one now) wasn't enough to keep the job. They are now (literally right now) moving across the country in hopes for work or at least a place where they can be happy while searching.

I have been doing a lot of thinking about remote recording and why it seems to dying profession for many. Here is what I have come up with as to reasons it is less profitable and there are less gigs to do.

1. Orchestras and Ensembles either going under or deciding not to have their concerts recorded because they are trying to save money.

2. Too many people doing remote recordings and not enough places or groups needing their services.

3. Amateurs doing the recordings for fun or as a hobby and not charging or charging very little.

4. Some groups no longer want their concerts recorded audio only because many parents and participants want to see themselves on a DVD. If you are not offering Video recording as part of your services you may soon find yourself out of a job.

5. Many places are now offering to record concerts as part of their offerings. Colleges have been doing this for years but lately churches and auditoriums that are used by outside groups are offering to record the performance both audio and video for a set fee and many times these same places put in so many restrictions that an outside contractor cannot do the recording. There is one church near here that on their RULES AND REGULATIONS sheet says that 'there will be no cables allowed on the floor due to fire code restrictions" but of course the church has all their cameras built in and all their microphones are flown. I don't know how you would get around this rule but it is GREAT reason for using their in house AV production unit and not hiring someone from the outside.

6. The colleges, as part of their courses, are offering to record performance for free or for a very reduced rate so their students can learn the art of ensemble recording. They typically have someone with some advanced skills supervising the students but the students are using this experience as part of their course work and the school picks up much of the cost as an educational expense.

7. NPR radio stations are now doing a lot of the recording of events that use to be done by an outside person and they are doing them for free.

8. More and more community orchestras and singing groups are buying their own equipment and doing the recordings themselves.

Please feel free to add to this listing.

Sorry, it wasn't meant to be... It's about people in high positions who pretended to be religious but whose actions weren't. Which is not entirely unrelated to people who hire and fire the way it happened to Mike. People you trust and who eventually use their position and the power it comes with very inappropriately.
Being the stone-cold atheist that I am (or non-believer, as Obama said in his inauguration speech), I have my views on religion as such, with or without such scandals, but that's not what I was aiming at.
If I may add, Teddy did not say anything against religion, either. He told us why he personally decided to quit.

And Mike: Get a job... Whatever it is. If you can't make a living with music recording where you are, you can't. Get something to keep you afloat.
