Question Noise Reduction Plugin for Mac

I occasionally need a noise reduction plugin to take HVAC noise out of my live recordings. A friend used Sound Forge's NR and it works perfectly for what I need. But. . .it only runs on PC.

Should I get Sound Forge and run it in parallels on my mac, or is the some equivalent native mac? I use Reaper as my DAW.

Thanks.

D.

Izotope Rx is pretty good

Doug, It is a bit beyond your budget but I have found it to be a very effective tool for NR and restoration. I have been using it since it came out on the Mac as a standalone and now it is available as a plug-in also.

Doug;

The Izotope tool is great.

Also try Bias Sound Soap. I use it to clean up background noise and have even had success with over-modulated audio for video tracks as well as mis-matched dolby B noise reduction.

If you are a student of any kind, then you can get a discount on the Izotope RX which will reduce it to $175. I will say that it is a great piece of software.

I also own Soundsoap, and it's OK. (I don't own Pro, much less the new Pro.)

But the fact is, Soundsoap and a lot of the other varieties just remove "blankets" or specific frequencies of noise. I'm not sure if that's what you are dealing with regarding your HVAC problem.

If it is bursts of noise, then you might want to remove them with a spectral repair option. There is one in Izotope RX, and it's very good, there is also one for $60 from Stillwell called Spectro:

Spectro | Stillwell Audio - It's About The Sound

But Spectro does not allow for dialing in a specific noise range and removing it. Spectro allows you to find and highlight specific noise events- like say, a cough- and reducing or scrubbing it away entirely.

Izotope RX allows for both approaches, and has a better sound with fewer artifacts than does Soundsoap, to my ears, and I can't speak to the rest.

My advice is to download the demo of Izotope's software, learn it, as it's pretty deep. And also in tandem download Spectro.

I recently had a project that had some tracks that was mostly unaccompanied choral done in a room with noticeable but not horrible A/C. After quite a while trying my super-expensive NR but not being able to get rid of the artifacts I decided to try the Izotope RX that I had not gotten around to trying yet.

I could hardly believe the results-- and this was not the Advanced version.RX is one of the most amazing tools I have ever used-- even when compared to the several thousand $$ plugins I already own. When I was done I could not tell which tracks were RXd and which ones weren't!

I last tried Soundsoap several years ago but it was a one-trick pony that did not do too well on the one-trick. Save your money unless the improvement has been astounding.

Can one buy soundtrack pro just the program, or does one have to buy the whole logic studio pack?

Anyway, Apple soundtrack has some really decent noise reduction built in.. with "spectral erasing" also..Not as good as Izotope, but not bad at all..

Soundtrack Pro only comes with the full Logic Studio, or with Final Cut Studio.
