Question Again on snakes

Hi all

I'm building some new 8ch snakes for my rig and I'd like to know how you guys store and protect the fan out XLR tail when transporting them. I noticed that no matter how tightly I solder them the XLRm connectors in my snakes tend to bounce around and become faulty over time. My last gig on friday got 2 faulty lines that forced me to repatch on the fly (no problems in the end).
What do you use, velcro, gaffa, bags or other tricks?

Thanx

L.G.

First off, why 8 channels? I like the 12 channel configuration because I'm always needing "just one more channel" on the 8's. But if it works for you, go for it, just wanted to throw that out there. I like the Whirlwind pig bags. They make at least two sizes, the small one being appropriate for 8 channels worth of connectors. You can also wrap Velcro around the end of the cable just before the connectors to keep them bunched together. This will give some protection while avoiding a tangled up mess as you pull them out of the pig bag.

Hi

Thanx for replying. I like my snakes in 8 or 16 channels, because when working with larger ensembles I usually lay down my mics as 8 ch front (for mains and strings) and 8 or more channels back (for winds, brass etc...). When I do smaller gigs usually an 8 channel is enough.
I like that Whirlwind bag...I'll check those out. Thanx for the heads up.

Lightbulb

We use Whirlwind Pig Bags too; they come in two sizes.

We tether the Pig Bag to the snake with cord that's surrounded by expandable tubing for long lasting protection.

The tether keeps the bag from walking.

They work perfectly!

The classic fan bag is the "velvet" bag in which one receives a bottle of Crown Royal. Not too well padded (I like Shure mic bags for my 8ch TRS fans) but one that will win admiring smiles from any FOH or monitor road dog...

I make my own.

I have an old canvas tent that I cut pieces out of and sew them up with a draw string. This way I can make any size I need. The thick canvas protects the connectors well. It's also an ugly green kaki color that nobody is going to steal.
