Arrow What Are The Best Books On Sound For ENG, Film, TV ETC.?

Greetings,
What are the best books for learning about sound for ENG, movies, video, TV? Are there any highly regarded DVDs or videos?

Thanks in advance-

Sorry, and not being a jerk here; you can't learn it from a book.

Thank you for your reply.
I in no way think I can learn it from a book. I however DO read everything I can to prepare myself before starting something new. There is something wrong with thinking ALL that you need are a few books, but nothing wrong with reading books written by people who are industry professionals to learn what you can beforehand.

That said.....
How about a few suggestions people?
Have you read nothing on this subject that was helpful?

Mt "go to" book for recording on location is Bartlett's "Recording Music on Location." It may not answer all your questions but it is a starting point and his footnotes and references may point you further towards where you want to go.

The real key is practice, practice, practice. Record everything you can under every circumstance. And keep doing it. You wil learn what to do and what not to do. Also, find someone who is doing it and getting paid for it and sell him your soul in exchange for letting you be part of what he does. And watch what he does closely.

Good luck. If this is what you truly want to do, do it!

Any local pros that you might talk to? That would be my suggestion. Visit them on the job if you can; offer to help out for free. Buy 'em a Starbucks, be interested but not over-eager. Most will let you hang out an watch.

And, BTW, recording sound for TV and Film is very, very different in technique than recording live music. Same basic principle but not otherwise any way similar.

Just my $.02 but I do both.
