Talking Dynamic Vocal Mic's

Howdy, People.
1st post! Just Joined! I am putting together a Mobile studio and I need to pick some dynamic mic's I have about 16 condensors but no Dynamics. Take that back I picked up a Audix Fusion 7 (Drum Kit mic set) last week. So I am fine with Drum mic's but of course I was thinking I would pick up a couple sm 57's and 58's to add to the arsenal. It seems they are a pretty common stage mic. What else. I see there a ton of different ones out there and to be honest unless I start doing more Sound Reinforcement I don't think I'll use them that much(for Vocals) maybe the 57 for mic'ing Guitar Cab's. I was kicking around the idea of picking up the cheaper Shure PG Series or AT 4000's , or Sennheiser 609 . Any Tips?

I'm a big fan of the Heil dynamic mics. I use PR40 on kick and bass, PR30 on just about every other instrument, and PR35 on vocals.

I use them mixing all styles of music and find they translate very well.

Other dynamics I like:

Beyer M201, M88
Sennheiser 441

You should have a bunch of SM57's and SM58's. I actually prefer the 57 on snare to a lot of other mics, and I like them vocals as well. 57's & 58's are pretty rugged and useful. I have had all mine for 15 years or more.

I actually prefer the SM81 (condenser) on guitar cabinets to the 57's or 58's.

SM7's are also pretty useful. Sennheiser 441's are nice. Some people like the Senn 609 on kick. For REALLY loud sources the Senn 421 is a good choice.

If you are taking splits, then you will be restricted to what the PA is using.
In live situations, I often make a few of my own choices and double mic certain things: guitar cabinets, bass cabinets, and certain percussion instruments, and so forth, while using some of the PA's mics: Vocals, solo wind instruments, etc. I also try to use my own mics in orchestral, jazz and acoustic situations where the PA may not have the best sonic options available.

It depends on what you're miking and what type of situation you're in. If you're doing rock bands in small clubs then you might think about durability, maybe even ov er sound quality. I love 421's on horns, especially saxes. I took several on the road and they got destroyed because of audience members knocking over the mic stands in places with no barricade.

That said, here are some of my favorite general purpose dynamics in no particular order: e906 (way better than the 609), md441, md421, Audix i5, RE20, and of course having a slew of 57's on hand is never a bad thing.

Don't buy those cheap mics when you can get good dynamic mics for only a little more. Shure SM 57 and 58s are only $100.00 Sennheiser 845s are only $130. I like all the other mics everyone else mentioned also.

I'd have to seconod the Heil mics. sm57's are great but I tend to pick a Heil PR20 over them for most uses. PR30 are just as good as a Shure SM7b which is also a must have dynamic. Come to think of it , yeah go buy an SM7b right now if you don't already have one.

Most important: don't buy the cheap Shure alternatives. There is a reason '57s and '58s are the de facto standards, and at under $100/each, they are a bargain, as are AT4000 and Senn 609s, which are good alternates to have.

Many thanks!

Thank you for all your input, ordered a Heil PR 20, SM 57 and 58 and a few AT 4000's to round it out. I'll probably get another of each the 57 and 58 as well but for now it's a start.
