Question HD24XR ethernet to mac

I am having trouble getting my brand new HD24xr to connect to my macbook pro's ethernet.

When downloading and trying to install FST Connect v1.01 (the only one I can find on Alesis's website), It tells me it cannot be installed on this computer. (See attached screenshot)

MBP Unibody Intel 17"
OS X 10.5.8

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I already know that there is an easier, $200 way to transfer files, but I want to check this feature out.

You don't need the connect software to use the File Transfer Protocol (FTP), it's right there in Safari, Mozilla, or whatever browser you use. The HD24's ethernet plug needs to be connected to a hub or a switch that your computer is also connected to.

You give the HD24 an IP address using the menus system, and it needs to be on the same network as the Mac, but not the exact same network. This will most likely be in the range of 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.250. The gateway address is the address of your internet router, if you have one, but it shouldn't be needed if all devices are on the same 192.168.1.xxx network.

Then initiate an FTP conversation with the HD24 using your browser. For instructions just look up help for "FTP". It will most likely start with a path something like this: FTP://192.168.1.10, where the IP address is belongs to the HD24.

The files on the HD24 should appear in your browser allowing you to click on them for download to the Mac.

HD24 Tools is a better replacement for the Alesis software. Both require a dock connected to your PC for the hard disk. There may be a Mac version of it. Definitely worth checking out, though you still need the hardware to make it work.

FTP over ethernet is verrrrry slow, but it works and doesn't cost extra.

I found Ethernet to be so slow as to be unusable. I went with this $89 (plus shipping) solution with my Macbook:

ViPowER Store

In addition to using it to transfer HD24 files to the Mac, I also use it with swappable drives as a cheap way to back up my Mac. I keep two mac-formatted drives in HD24/ViPowER caddies for that purpose (ViPowER apparently makes the caddies for Alesis).

If you haven't already done so, check out the HD24 users group on Yahoo for a list of drives that have found to be reliable with the HD24, as well as lots of other information about common HD24 problems/solutions:

Good luck with you HD24xr,

Joe

Thanks for the replies,
I already gathered that the ethernet would be pretty slow being only 10-base T. I really only want to be able to use it to give it a try and see for myself how it works.

I already tried to remove the drive and drop it in a FW enclosure, but my mac said it couldn't read the drive. I will be picking up the firewire connection kit for sure.

I have just one question:

What does this mean?

FWIW, I couldn't get the FTP server to work properly, I just used HD24 Tools which worked absolutely perfectly (unlike Alesis' own software - appalling support really).
