Unfortunately when you're talking about replacing Keith Moon it takes more than being competent and not sucking.

My guess is that you never got to see Moonie play live.

Because it's THE WHO, that's why!

I was fortunate enough to have seen The Who play at a Day on the Green show in the late '70s, co-billed with The Greatful Dead. Moon actually did not appear to be visibly drunk at the show - and man, was he in top form! At one point he did a somersault over the drum kit and his playing was spot on!

Zak's a great drummer, but he just ain't Moon..........
Let's not forget, they originally replaced Moon w/ Kenny Jones and that was a very poor choice, I think they then tried Simon Philips (Petes driummer when solo) and then Alan White (?) and now we 're at Zak. There is no one like Moon, never was, never will be, cannot be replaced. They could have packed it in like Zeppelin, but it seems Entwhistle needed cash and there were still some tunes to be recorded...some not-so-bad-tunes at that.

Leaving aside the quality of the sounds produced by Keith Moon's drumming, the spectacle of what he looked like while playing was fascinating. The man was completely unhinged and all over the place. It's a surprise that any music was made at all, much less the great music of which he was a part.

Damn. Seriously tough crowd here.

I watched it in HD 5.1 in NYC. Sync was perfect. The mix sounded quite good on a high end home surround system; I watched a DVR mix later on regular TV speakers and it did not translate as well, just as the YouTube video sounds lame on computer speakers.

While I had a few comments and a few complaints about the overall event AND the performance, at the end of the day, had I mixed this broadcast halftime event life, I'd have felt an enormous accomplishment in simply having achieved and pulled the thing off.

I say: "Job well done!"

I felt like the mix of the halftime was better than the mix of the sporting event, but I would also congratulate the mixer of the sporting event and say, "job well done!"

I'd like to see everyone here go through the Superbowl process. It's no walk in the park to doa show of that size.

Some very large broadcast feeds I have done have had various talent components that included live/live, live w/ backing tracks, and some talent all sync to track, and not one was ever perfect sounding. I don't think anything that's LIVE is ever perfect, and that's whats so hard about doing LIVE. And why nothing else is like a live broadcast or recording.

Just my $.02.

Have a great day, remotesters!

I'm with JvB on this one.

It seems like it's much easier to complain about a mix than to talk about what was good about it.

I didn't watch it in HD 5.1, so I cannot comment on that, but I did see it on my home system via DVR playback and the halftime stereo music mix really wasn't (that) bad to my ears. I mean, considering how quickly everything is set-up and torn down plus everything else that's going on around you it was a pretty decent music mix. And, if they were performing live to playback the sync was spot on.

We could find all sorts of complaints, but all in all it was a huge job well done.
IMO, whoever mixed that performance should be very proud of it.
Kudos to you (and your associates,) halftime music mix guys/gals!

Like JvB said, and I paraphrase , It's an enormous accomplishment in simply having achieved and pulled the thing off."

Indeed it was a job well done!

Thank you JvB for bringing this to our attention; you are da man, mon!

I agree, Jim and Steve.

I had absolutely no beef about the mix, only the sync. Fletcher informed me on the thread I started here that point of sync occurs locally and that's where my half-time show ran into problems. As I stated in that thread, I felt the MIX was fine but the battle to obtain sync caused glitches, zipper noise and pitch/tempo issues. I'm glad that my experience was the exception and not the rule.

I had to chuckle today when I received my net based AES journal and under the new "section meeting recordings" heading, the London chapter's last meeting was titled, ‘Maintaining audio-video sync in today’s broadcast environment’. If only it had come out in January....
