Guys: Right you are. The RCA, Coles, U47,67 and others you mention were/are also used extensively. Many of the pictures from that golden era show that these were the workhorses in the major studios...of course, they were also going into other high-dollar gear that we "home-studio" guys don't have...and not to mention the fact you state, that all this gear was being operated by some award-winning engineers! All of it does make a difference, but in my small world, the TLM 102 is a great pro-level tool....now, if I could only get that Neve board I'm lusting after...... |

| Yes, there is a new mic from Josephson you will like on trumpet if you liked the Sony 37. It is the C715. It is certainly not noisy.

...and BTW, I've been using the TLM 102 for about a month straight every day for trumpet and vocals......IT IS A GREAT MIC! Has changed my opinion of the "low end" Neumanns...this mic is FANTASTIC!!!!! |

I'm not a trumpet player, but in my course of producing, recording and playing on all sorts of records I've come across a few different things depending on the situation at hand. For most solo trumpet, my go to for trumpet is an rca 44. The aea of course is a perfect substitute. Rick Braun often uses a jim williams modded akg c414. I've done some pop horn section things where I needed the bite of a condenser and we used U87's for the brass. N |

Beyer M260n sounds like a trumpet through the speakers, less to do after, I have 3. Claudio Riberio was always very happy.

The new EAE KU4 has got to be incredible, judging from how great the magical original RCA KU3A sounds on trumpets. We use RCA 44s a lot, and R121, and RCA 77s. If you like the TLM102, try a TLM193. Even better, IMHO. TLM170 is a film-scoring studio standard. U47 rules the roost for "that" great vintage sound. Rent a good one! Soundelux e49s are pretty awesome, but placement is critical, just like any LDC is going to be. Depends on the music to be recorded, and the player. At my studio, the usual guys are Wayne Bergeron, Malcolm McNab, Rick Baptist, Gary Grant, Charlie Davis, Larry Hall, Jon Lewis... greg .
