Question getting rid of truck noise, etc...

i have to record in a church tomorrow that i have recorded in before. it is, like most older churches, in town and suffers from the regular passage of heavy trucks and other noisy interruptions.

i have had success using noise reduction plugins to get rid of l background noise - IF i can record a sample of the noise all by itself. so, before i begin the session, i will record 10-15 seconds of just background noise - this will take care of HVAC and other more constant sources.

but, the occasional passage of a heavy truck or loud car with no muffler, etc, i may not get in my short back ground recording.

what is the best way/what is your preferred method of getting rid of heavy truck noise or other intermittent noises which can degrade the overall recording? surgical EQ? other? thanks.

I agree. I just got it and I'm no expert but you can sample a section of the recorded track and it will use that for noise removal.
If your recording isn't a live performance then you might be able to eliminate alot of noise with gobos etc.

RX and RenoVator, both with spectral editing for the louder passages and coughs, cell phones etc.

Exactly. Or more general, spectral editing of some sort can be a tremendously powerful tool. Just be careful to not over-do it, it can introduce nasty artifacts sometimes.

Rx is brilliant, do it in stages ie Apply small amounts of reduction to slightly different noise profiles several times. A close truck is hard to get rid of but if it sounds fairly natural, treated gently with RX, it will blend into the background much better than if it has noise reduction artifacts all over it. If it really jumps out, consider adding some more truck noise in around it to ease it in.

I watched a film the other day 'Seraphine'. It's a French film, and a great watch but some of the sound post was bizarre. Outdoor scenes, no dialogue or even useful PFX seemed to use production sound so heavily noise treated there was loud, and distracting 'space monkeys' going on - the most common artifact from overdoing the reduction. My wife was saying "what the hell is that noise ?" - I don't know what they were monitoring on, perhaps it was intentional, but it wasn't working for me. I thought the general balance of the mix was a bit off so probably a low sound post budget.

well,, as it turned out, i was able to get rid of almost all the truck and vehicle noises, and the tracks turned out pretty well, with one tiny exception - a cell phone. right in the middle of a 9 minute piece, i got that "bzz, bzz,,,bzz, bz, bz" sound from someone's cell doing its connect to the tower thing - no ringing or anything, just the buzz thing.

it is pretty low in the mix, but still annoying, and i dont know quite how to get rid of it. any ideas?

How did you clean up the rest? Izotope works on those sounds too but you might be able to use a freebie or much cheaper plug in. Can you post a clip?

It's the cell phone buzz between 10 and 14 seconds in the left channel.
After 5 mins of Spectral Repair in RX it's killed (Attenuate mode used, Strength set to 1.5, FFT size set to 256 and 128).

Wavelab also has spectral editing which is quite good.
