Is a good mic pre a good mic pre.....

.....no matter what's plugged into it? Specifically, what about for dynamic mics? Do certain pre's match up better with the dynamic mic workhorses of the industry (ex: 635a's and RE-20's, 57's and 58's, 421's and M-88's, mics with regular or neo magnets)?

No, I'm not suggesting that the pre should somehow change the character of the dynamic mic (if that's even possible). I'm wondering out loud if there's anything special I need to look for if the pre is going to have a dynamic plugged into its input stage.

I'd especially like to hear the opinions of the broadcast and live sound folks since the dynamic is more likely choice in those area (I do broadcast and post).

I did a voice over recording where the "famous" talent would only use a hand held mic. The only thing I had with me was an SM58. Plugged into a grace 201, it sounded beautiful! Much better than I had imagined. I think a good quality pre will bring out the best of a mic.
