Question Simple dumb connector question???

Hey guys,

I am wondering about something i feel is most likely very simple? When doing location recording or any really. If using something like the multimix 12/16 which has XLR/ 1/4 mono but also 1/4 stereo inputs. How would i go about connecting xlr to the 1/4 stereo? use an xlr female to stereo 1/4" or something. If i split a guitar signal before the snake and input the two channels, 1 for FOH and one for my recording setup and its being sent through the snake and ends up as an XLR but i want to connect in to the stereo inputs can i just use a simple little xlr to 1/4 adapter or are those things junk? Or if im using mic splitters which only have XLR outs and i want to plug into 1/4 input for say a keyboard which should be inputted at line level? Same for FOH if i have a stereo keyboard and i go out of the board L/R 1/4 to a L/R DI which then goes out via 2 xlr to the snake and then to the FOH board do i just plug into 2 channels voa XLR or use adapters to go line level?

If your talking about an Alesis Multimix then the 1/4 stereo ins are balanced TRS Line level. So you would need an adapter cable. Also since they're line ins you can't plug a guitar in you need to go through a di and preamp first, I would take the keys line out if it's balanced to line ins and not use a DI unless you have a noise problem with it.

Ill start with keys. I was planning on just going direct to a stereo set ok inputsthumbsup currently hes board has l/r unbalanced and balanced 1/4 outs. I use the balanced to DI for FOH but can use them for recording and use unbalanced to DI right?

For the rest of my mumbo jumbo bable.... My thoughts were scrambled when i started the thread. I will be using the alesis 12 firewire. And was planning on using bus's and a few aux sends from our FOH board to the stereo Line ins on the alesis. The only instruments im splitting and going into the mic pre ins are lead vox, bass, snare and kick. Keys are going direct but to line ins. That leaves me 3 stereo line in inputs. I was planning on using 2 post fader aux's for guitars L/R to stereo in, then the remaining drums as a sub group L/R 1/4 out to 1/4 stereo in, then last would be another L/R bus for L/R back vox going 1/4 out to the last stereo line in. The alesis line inputs have a nominal in sensitivity of -+10dBU and the mic ins have a nominal of -10dBu w/ a max of +5dBu. All the outs from my FOH board are +4dBu so i should be good hooking them up the new described way right?

Thanks

It sounds like it should work. I'm not sure about using the outputs from the keys at the same time but give it a try. The unbalanced out should work fine to a DI because they're usually there for a monitor amp.
