The microphone companies are offering a trade in program.
The big news coming out of the order is that all unlicensed mics operating in the 700mhz and other bands which were previously illegal (aprox 90% of the wireless mics) with an output of under 50 mw. will now be able to operate until that date. It looks like low power unlicensed use is on the way to being made legal.

I thought we already were not allowed to use the 700 MHz band. I stopped trying to keep up with this months ago. When the dust has completely settled then I'll try to sort it all out for myself. My question for now is: What happens to people stil operating in the 700's after that date? Mics aren't going to magically stop working. Is the FCC going to patrol and enforce this? As you mention, Steve, it has technically been illegal to operate ANY wireless mic without a license but we all do it anyway without consequence. Is this going to be the same?

I don't think the FCC will get involved unless they are asked to by the new license holder in that area. There are several public safety bands in the 700s too and I personally wouldn't operate anything in those frequencies.
The new order seems to regognize the problem with the existing use of non licensed wireless mics and gives them the right to continue to be used until the June date (all frequencies). In the meantime the FCC has asked for further comments regarding this. It reads like they want to allow unlicensed use for wireless mics under 50mW in the TV "white space" bands.

Par 109 deals with this.

Operation of Wireless Mics in 700 MHz Band

OPERATION OF WIRELESS MICROPHONES IN THE 700 MHZ BAND IS PROHIBITED AFTER JUNE 12, 2010

Under a new FCC rule, anyone who uses a wireless microphone that operates in the 700 MHz Band will have to stop operating their wireless microphone by June 12, 2010. To see if this law affects your wireless microphone, check our Manufacturers Equipment list.

Why did the FCC make this rule?
Certain wireless microphones have operated in frequencies that are needed for public safety. When these microphones were first designed, the frequencies they used were in between the frequencies that television stations used to broadcast television programs. With the completion of the digital television (DTV) transition on June 12, 2009, television stations no longer use the frequencies between 698 and 806 MHz (the 700 MHz Band) for broadcast. These frequencies are now being used by public safety entities (such as police, fire and emergency services) and by commercial providers of wireless services (such as wireless broadband services).

The wireless microphones that had been operating in the old TV broadcast channels can cause harmful interference to these public safety and wireless consumer services. Therefore, all users of wireless microphones (or certain low power auxiliary stations) that operate on any of the frequencies in the 700 MHz band – including both licensed users (under Part 74) and unlicensed users – now have to stop operating in this band.

The FCC is only prohibiting the use of wireless microphones that operate in the 700 MHz Band. You may continue to use wireless microphones that operate on other broadcast frequencies.

Microphones with cords are not affected by the FCC’s decision. Imagine that.
