I just verified that you cannot do a 2mix in MP3. When the MP3 side of things are as flexible as the WAV side that will be really nice for the times when it is ultimately time-effective to record in MP3.

Hello Rich:

It is more common than not for portable recorders to offer limited parameters when recording to MP3 (as compared to WAV, etc.) as it requires significant computational resources. (And it's common for lots of gear to offer reduced functionality when recording to high sample rates.) The Tascam fits well within the norm.

I don't see how converting files to mp3 is especially bothersome or time consuming, but that's a different issue, I guess. Perhaps I'm missing something.

Record to .WAV... import the 2-mix to iTunes as a mp3 at the bitrate you choose... should take time enough to sip some coffee. In fact, took just 7 seconds to convert a 73.4mb 7:16 long .WAV file to 128mbps mp3 on the MBP. Unless my math is incorrect, that's about a minute per hour of 2-mix.

Drag the mp3 out of the iTunes library to the delivery medium of your choice.

Am I the one missing something here?

Or... if you still have a bitbucket, send the 2-mix out of the TASCAM to the bitbucket set to record at the mp3 rate you want. Real-time, with a backup. What could be better?

Brilliant, Harry! Should have known you could supply the shortcut. The Sequoia 128bps MP3 codec is probably more thorough. It chews through a 110-minute stereo MP3 VIP and renders it back to 128bps in about 12 minutes. Some minor DSP in action. Interesting thing is if the original was a WAV file it would be about 1GB and would also take about 12 minutes to bounce to a MP3. (ProTools guys take note) Not really that long but I want it NOW!!! Sounds like iTunes could do it in 2 minutes.

I am your servant...

Let us know what it actually takes. The 7-min clip was the longest .WAV I had on the MBP.

Or you could use the Batch converter that is built into Sequoia. take your mix files and to a batch conversion (heck even process if you want in the conversion). If you're worried about time, set it before bed and get your files when you wake up.

Hello,

wanted to ask something about monitoring on the 680.

If I press solo for a certain channel that is panned hard left (or right), the monitoring of the channel swaps to the centre.
Seems that the soloing is a sort of pre-pan which is odd, I think.
When recording and monitoring stereo pairs this is quite a problem...

Hi Rich,

I have installed firmware 1.20 which is the latest update...
The soloing on your 680 is behaving different?

Igor.

Having the "solo" function come straight down the center has been the case for all analogue mixers I've used. The idea is it's kinda hard to evaluate or troubleshoot a channel if it's only coming through one side, I suppose...

Imagine if this $800.00 plus (USD) portable recorder could do solo-in-place, pre-fader listen and after fader listen...

Now, that would be a bargain.

I suppose so...

Well, let's hope so that in firmware 1.21 some of these functions are implemented.

I'm gonna send TASCAM website support a message. One never knows.

On the topic of which class SD card to use- keep in mind that in 24 tracks of 24bit, the data size is 3.03MB/Sec in 44.1k, and 6.59MB/Sec in 96k. One man's overkill is another's safety blanket.
