Talking Sony pcm D50, and XLR1.

Hi all
My old FR2 is not so trusty anymore. The internal power feeding the mics with phantom is not working perfectly, and it brings noise etc to the recordings.
Further more the unit still consumes alot of batteries, too fast.

Anyone using the Sony PCM-D50 and the Sony XLR-1, for fx, ambs etc?
Any thoughts on how well this unit compares to a Sounddevices 702?

Best wishes,

Mikkel

Here are a few reports (via my faithful PCM D50) documenting the free-wheeling street festivals in historic Troy, New York.

Troy Night Out!

(I include lots of "cars sweeping down the rain-slicked streets" for ambiance, background crowd chatter, streetcar bells & like that, in addition to the interviews and musical performances.)

(Just using the onboard mics, though. I wonder if Sony would like a review of the XLR-1........?)

The Sony DC50 was impossible for me to hand hold & record; too much bumps as the mics are too sensitive & not shock mounted well. I've noticed most everyone who has one uses a little tripod to do hands off recordings.

The Tascam DR07 or Zoom H4 I could hold & record with. Pieces of applause & some Quail from 'The Ranch' were recorded with the Tascam &/or Zoom that Ren let me use in Benjamin Button.

If you are looking at he SD 702, you should add the Nagra LB to the list (similar price).

These two seem way ahead of other 2-channel recorders.

Thanks alot all of you.
I wasnt planning on using the onboard mics on the sony. I want to use the XLR 1 in combination with it, and external mics..
Ill look at the Nagra too.

Best wishes,

Mikkel

XLR-1 adaptor for the Sony PCM-D50

I own the PCM-D50 and was wondering if I wanted to go in with my pair of DPA 4011s, how will this adapter work?

Here is another way to get into the PCM-D50. It's $150 more than the XLR-1 but it has a level control for each channel. You will need the XLR breakout cable and the optical cable which gives you a VERY clean connection to the Sony.

Why not getting a FR-2LE with Tamaya battery. You can record 7/8h with phantom and the preamp are comparable to the FR2.

Does it mean that they are not the same ones and not as good?

Hey Didier,
That means that I repeat what I read on the Net and that I can't confirm because I have no access to a FR2.
From the specs of the two recorders, the S/N is 87 db for the FR2 and 85 for the FR-2LE.

From my experience with the FR-2LE in quiet situations with high output mics (MC930), the preamp don't add any audible noise.

Thanks to all, and sorry for not replying sooner.
I have given it much thought, and have finally made up my mind to get a Sounddevices recorder instead. Either a 702 or a used 744t.

Thanks,

Mikkel
