Not really sure what you mean by "Feedback Trainer"

A long time ago I was working for a sound company in Buffalo, NY. When things got a little slow we'd play a drinking game... after a minimum of a few shots or beers or whatever, we'd turn on the oscillator and a full range speaker cabinet. The game was "guess the frequency" if you win you can have a drink. If you lose you can have two. Never thought much about it until I realized that I was pretty good at identifying feedback and eq problems. Hmmmmm (or should I say hum)

Danny

Q: Why is the PA system humming?
A: Because it doesn't know the words.

I'm not sure what you mean...

Are you referring to a program that simulates the process of "ringing out' a sound system or room?

Or a system that helps you identify the various frequencies by ear?

One good way is in the field - set up early, or in a warehouse, and play with the graphic to make feedback and listen to what each slider does.

I'v ben doing this for so long that any time there is free time on a gig (and nobody close to bother) I will do it a little.

Nothing like on the job learning! Each room is different, and recognizing them gets easy with practice...

Ah, so it is about a system that helps you identify the various frequencies by ear.

Thanks!

Feedback Trainer for Mac

Hi everyone,

I came across this thread a while back when I was looking for a mac feedback trainer and have since then found the time to try making one using MAX5. It's not quite finished yet but I thought I'd post to gauge interest.

So, anyone still looking for one of these?

It will be free of course (as simple feedback trainer always has been), will run on both Windows and OS X and allow for the improvement of frequency recognition and also allow you to choose a specific frequency to hear to familiarise yourself with the sound.

Chris.

Feedback Trainer v1.4 now available!

Hi everyone,

I got through the issues I was having and the mac version is now available on my website (link below).

Chris Allen's Website | My Software

I hope you enjoy using it and please feel free to email/message me with any comments of feedback.

A windows version will be on the way as soon as I get MAX running in Fusion.

Chris.

Gonna give it a try. I was using feedback trainer via Codeweaver Crossover, however I prefer a Mac version. Thank you very much.
The other soft in your web looks useful too.

DL-ing a bunch of your software, Chris.

Truly useful.

Very nice website design, too.

Variant: distortion trainer

I stumbled across this thread (and site) looking for something that appears not to exist yet: a tool for training detection of distortion. I've seen and used the frequency trainer a few times before and it is a fantastic tool and was reminded of it during a discussion today with some students who were admitting they are not that confident at detecting distortion. Does anyone know of such a training tool? I have quite a clear idea of how it would work but lack the programming skills to just crack on and write it...

Thanks guys!

As an aside, being new to the forum I am warmed to the cockles how respectful this place is - what a refreshing change!

Ive been setting graphic eq's for years by ear, I recently bought a Behringer FBQ3102 on eBay and use it as a graphic analyzer for setting up systems.... Just brilliant and takes about 1/4 of the time of doing it by ear.

Peavey also make the QF131 ($200 online) which also has the LEDs that "show" you the freqs that are ringing. We have one on the PA in the youth area at church, at it's really valuable to help them find and notch problems in their vocal wedges, and to help them learn the sound of 2.5K or 315 or whatever. I learned on a Rane stereo 15-band, which also had a spectrum analyzer, a pink noise generator, and over/under/zero LEDs on each band.

I'm still a fan of my Sabine GraphiQ... Yesterday I had a two room (plenaries and luncheon) AV setup for a small conference with a 5-hour photo shoot for the same client at a different venue (Oak Brook to Water Tower Square and back, through Chicago traffic at mid day) needing E6, lav, podium and six panel mics in a small room with a low ceiling (11' or so). Not my idea of fun. I set it up, got basic gains, levels, and EQ, opened all the mics with the Sabine in "ferret" mode, ran the master up, set the first seven filters, and went to bed. This morning... No problems. Even with a wireless lav (Shure WL185) 4' from the ceiling (presenter 6' tall on a 2' stage under the 10' ceiling).

As my friend Chad would say... "Me likey".
