Question calibrating w/ spectrum analizyers and sound analysis software

Hey guys i have been trying some freeware sound analysis software i can bring around with my ibook G4. I found some alright ones if anyone has any suggestions please post a link or the name i would like to try a few out. Anyway how would one use a spectrum analyzer to then tune a FOH EQ or channel strip EQ or monitor EQ. Lets say i wanted to analyze lead vox and the graph shows a spike around 6K or not very much activity in the low mids or highs above 10K yada yada yada. Would i wanna boost the dominate frequencies or cut them and boost the frequencies that are not as loud.

Thanks, any tips are appreciated.
