Talking What cables are you using for location work

What cables are you using for location work? My cables are 3 to 5 yrs old, they are the (middle of the road grade), 24’ rapco or 50’ whirlwind depending on the venue.

The cables do take abuse; they get walked on from time to time and are in cold temps when in transit.

I would like to get a snake to replace the above-mentioned cables.

What are you using that is of good quality and takes abuse well?

The other gear used: Earthworks preamps, Schoeps and DPA mics and Sound Devices recorder.

My mic. cables are BBC spec. star-quad from Canford Audio - my snake is a 7-way to the same spec.

All Neutrik connectors.

The snake must be at least 20 yeras old and still going strong.

On new cables I now specify the new Neutrik EMC XLRs.

We use mogami and vandamme depending on the use.
I highly recommend vandamme cables with neutrik termination

I exclusively use straight wire encore II which was my choice out of 20 cable tested.

I have cables by:

Belden
Bryant Broadcast
Canford Audio
Gotham
Kelsey Acoustics
Mogami
Van Damme
Van den Hul

It's such a mixture because I use different cables for different purposes and my rigs have evolved over the last 25+ years and are constantly growing and changing.

Current favourites are Van Damme for multicore and Gotham for mic cable.

I use a Canford Audio 12-way snake build for the danish broadcast corporation - it must be at least 15 years old

Short cables are mogami and sommer aes/ebu cables.

I think that you are ok with most of the major brands. What you need to steer clear of are the cheap "Chinese" copies such as those sold on Ebay. I would also recommend that you use quality connectors such as Neutriks. A PA company that I hire equipment from, bought a load of "cheap" cables, they don't coil well, jackets split and they have suffered several cable failures. Being that you can buy good quality cables from the likes of Canford and Studiospares, relatively inexpensively, it really doesn't pay to save a couple of pounds per lead. Starquad offers the best RF rejection (TV companies use it all the time), however capacitance is usually, approximately doubled (due to its double set of conductors), however this is not likely to figure in the lengths that most people use normally. Using normal cable I've never had any issues.

Post GAC-3 with Neutrik Connectors

I've had excellent results with Gotham GAC-3 cable, as recommended by Klaus Heyne several years ago. Neutrik connectors.

Link for Gotham cable . . Gotham Audio LLC ~ The exclusive American and Canadian importer for Gotham Audio Cables

Hope this helps . .

Do you like the vandamme star quad for high end microphone use, schoeps dpa? I have an opportunity to purchase a 50 foot 8 channel for $399.

I use CBI cables (with Neutrik connectors). I'm a dealer so they're cheaper than making my own. They work. The end.

I just go to Redco.com, buy a couple hundred feet of Mogami and some Neutrik connectors and make the cables I need in the lengths I need. I also made some 2 channels snake cables for stereo DIs, stereo mic'ing, etc.

I've had them on the road since I started making them in 2001 or so and have had this number of failures so far: 0.

That's what I use, too. I buy the large roll (100 meters) of Canare and the connectors and make 'em myself. Way cheaper that way.

i gave up on commercial grade cables. i had my mic cables custom made from hand-pulled rubinium cores, embedded in 4" thick solid copper bars, and encased by heat-shield tiles from the space shuttle. i had to have a special truck built just to carry the cables to gigs, but they are the last cables i will ever have to buy...

VanDamme standard microphone cable with Neutrik terminations. Coils perfectly every time, cleans up very easily, looks good and not had a single one fail on me yet! Can't say the same for the other cables (Mogami/Neutrik + Hosa).

Where do you buy VanDamme? Do they make starquad in 4-pair multis?

Anyone using Sommer Cable? I'm placing an order for some stuff from Thomann and I'm thinking to buy some 4ch Sommer multi and make one 30m and two 15m cables.

In sweden I could probably get it for you, or order it through Cyber Farm - Hjem
They have no distribution here at the moment.

Nothing wrong with Sommer cable in my experience, you can get it from Studiospares, though I would avoid buying from Thomann, every time I've looked at stuff they are selling it is seriously expensive! Canford audio have a good range of cable at reasonable prices and often they have "bin ends" at good discount's, well worth a look.

Thanks Roland!
It seems that for my order (Sommer cable, neutrik conns, Edirol R-44, Manfrotto stands, two genelec 8020s and some stuff), Thomann outprices StudioSpares.

I have just listed 164ft MOGAMI AES 8ch snake at http://www.gearslutz.com/board/gears...ml#post4917676

Probably the last cable you'll need to buy!
