Recording Cello and Violin

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the tips on recording the upright. It sounded great - I tried a few takes w/ each miking setup.

Okay, now I'm doing violin and cello (all or mostly bowed) on Wednesday. They'll most likely be playing live together. Got any tips for this?

Same gear as last time:
- Digi 002 Rack
- Allen & Heath Board
- Rode K2
- Blue Dragonfly
- AKG small condenser (can't remember the model #, but it's a pretty nice mic)
- 57s
- cheap Oktava large condensers

you don't have a mic with a figure 8 pattern do you? it might be kind of awesome to do M/S on a small ensemble, if you don't have a plain old stereo pair of SDCs to use.

Isn´t k2 a multipattern? Set up that as side and dragonfly as mid, and tell us if it worked...

How are the tracks going to get used in the mix? Or is it a duet with just those two instruments? Stereo pair would be more real (if the room is good), spot miced more versatile. AKG480 is nice on strings, if that is what you´ve got.

I would just go with a SDC stereo pair.

Here is a recording I did--ORTF pair. There are two sets--the post explains it.
