Talking Help with preamp upgrade (jazz/classical)

Hi all-

As I have been doing more recording than playing of late, I am looking for some insight on a preamp upgrade. I record primarily jazz (mostly live) and occasionally something classical.

I have been upgrading my mics (AA CM-47 tube, pair of TLM 193's, etc.) and I am looking for a preamp in the $500 range.

I have been using the pres in a Yamaha MG series mixer and despite some of the negative comments in this forum have been relatively happy.

I have the opportunity to buy a Rane DMS-22. Would this be an upgrade? I am also looking at the Black Lion Auteur. Looking to go direct to ProTools. Unfortunately, API and Great River are not in the budget...

thanks in advance.

Looks like you are doing the smart thing by geting good mics (95% of the sound) and to get the most preamp bang for the buck take a look at:

D.A.V. electronics

$500 per channel? How many channels? Have you tried renting mid-line preamps?

Hi Rich

I hope I am not hijacking the thread by saying this: but I always thought you were a user of the True P8. Do you prefer the DAV? I'd be curious to know your comparative opinion on these two boxes if you would indulge me.

To the OP - as far as budget mic amps, if $500 is your total budget, I'd save up a little more before I pulled the trigger. I can't speak to the DAV stuff, but the first mic amp I bought was a Sytek and I am still not sorry to have it around - these can be had for a little more than $800 for 4 channels - not far beyond your price range.

Feeling like a broken record but Line Audio is clean and neutral. Can be had in 2 and 8 channel versions.

$500.00 a channel or a pair?
I would save up and get something REALLY good, instead of a small improvement..IMHO..
Jazz/Classical has a wide dynamic range, get a pre that can handle it...

You might go the DIY route and try the SCA pres. Two channels of C84s will cost you just over $600 and you can expand as needed. I'm using both the T15s and C84s for classical and like them both.

I sold my Grace Lunatec V3 for around $800. You might find another deal like that. I liked the sound and versatility a lot.

The d.a.v. electronics Broadhurst Gardens No. 1 mic amp is worth your attention.
It is the best mic amp available and it is well within your stated budget.

Don't be fooled into being attracted to mic amps with big advertising campaigns.

The d.a.v. electronics products are real Decca engineering and Decca circuitry.

Thanks all!

I was able to pick up a Grace m201 and True P-Solo used. I submitted a sales form to DAV for prices. Hopefully the first purchase of 2010.

Merry Christmas!

Best,

Matt
