Question HD24XR Problems - Kicks out of Record Mode....

Hey All;

I bought a second hand HD24XR a couple of months ago - used it on a couple gigs and it was fine, on Sat. Night it kicked out of record mode quite a few times....I never saw the actual error but I could restart it most times.

I used to rent an HD24 and it kicked out of record mode a couple times but I caught the error on it - it was a 'buffer write' issue or something due to the 200GB hard drive I was trying to use....since then I've held onto some 40GB and 80GB 7200rpm drives to use with these as Alesis support indicated some large drives would have buffer issues.

SOooo... Saturday Nights problem can't(shouldnt') be the buffer problem as it had 2x Maxtor 40GB drives in it, freshly formatted and armed....the only thing I've found online is this:

Some users have reported the HD24 recorder to fall out of record mode when used in extremely noisy environments due to sonic vibrations. This has reportedly been overcome in several ways, among others fixing the hard drive to the chassis of the recorder; placing the recorder on a soft surface (such as a blanket); or simply shielding the recorder from the loud sound. A solution that was reported successful by HD24 users on Yahoo Groups is to insert washers (thin metal rings) under the connector screws. This will slightly push out the connector, allowing it to make better contact.

which is from here:
Alesis ADAT HD24 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

...which makes me think 'Sweet Merciful Crap!' as live sound is definitely a loud environment!

Also - does anyone have the details on the Yahoo Users Group for these? I'm unfamiliar with it...

Hi Tungsten,

The "Washers" modification did the trick for me, It was discusses here before.

Best regards, Noam.

Yep, I did the washer trick and it worked wonderfully. It basically extends the caddy's SCSI connector so that it will seat more firmly inside the HD24. Put a rubber washer on each screw between the caddy and the connector and hopefully you'll be all set.

facking unbelievable...seems like a mod should have been done to these as they are supposed to be uber reliable....

The gig this was happening at, the HD24 was sidestage on a rubber wheeled ATA case. 12" Subs barely farting out a kick drum was the bass...in a room with a band you could almost talk over.....just don't understand how these things were designed for live sound and this is the problem! e

OK - will try the washers out and see if it works - not sure if I can get my home stereo loud enough to try it out but don't really want to wait until this weekends gig....

I've used mine in much louder environments than what you mention... without the washer mod... so it probably wasn't due to vibrations. Maybe update the firmware? If it happens on all different kinds of drives, something might be corrupted in the onboard software.
