Question system engineering help

Hi everybody,
I am doing a lot of live mixing jobs. I have some eperience with rigging, flying, cabling (line array) p.a.-systems but I am not a system engineer. I want to know more about this as I think in some occasions it could be very usefull..
Any tips that could get me started with this?
Thanks!

So, you're setting up these PA systems from truck to finish? That's a good start. With the line arrays, are you the one doing the focusing and time aligning? If not, and you don't know how, have the one who is show you. You can download EASE Focus for free from manufacturer's sites (I have the QSC one).

Hi

Being into system integration is a great responsibility. You might as well be acquainted to advanced Live Sound Reinforcements setups and
equipments that you can use. Considering the modern technology that
we can use today most especially digital systems. A lot of them using
good analog to digital equipments, like the highend mixing consoles,
advanced signal processors and durable drivers/speakers. Range of
equipment knowledge is very important that suits the client requirement.

For us we begin with knowing the best audio equipments that fits the job and setups at present, like the Ethersound Technology today. Knowing
the requirement of the client from there we do the research and provide them solutions on what kind of equipments do they need and integrate them begining with the diagram and designs, talk-over and implementation.

Hope this one helps!

System design & engineering is no small thing- I'd start by doing a good bit of reading,
starting with "Sound System Engineering" by Don Davis, and then Bob McCarthy's "Sound Systems Design & Optimization". Both books are excellent and you will love them.

If you're working with line arrays, each manufacturer has their own set of calculation software and a handbook/instruction manual to match, so if you're using primarily V-dosc, Meyer, JBL VerTec, etc then you should get in touch the that manufacturer and get as much information from them as you can, and study, study, study!

If you're mixing shows on systems that someone else is designing, then it's part of your job to get in touch with the system designer & engineer and tell them you're learning, and ask them to help teach you- ask them what they feel the rig is capable of, in terms of throw, coverage, SPL levels, and feel free to ask them why they think it was good choices, and pick their brains! People are usually happy to share when it's not a criticism of your work.

Lastly- Meyer has some phenomenal educational seminars, that apply to ALL manufacturers, not just their own. I'd suggest looking to see what you could go see in your region/language of choice. AES also has a series of workshops, papers, and seminars that are worth looking into.

Hope this helps!
