Talking Wierd black box on top of live vocal mic?

I remember watching a live music event awhile back on TV and saw that the lead vocalist had a black box about the size of a pager ontop of his vocal mic. At the time I thought it might have been some kind of proximity gate or something...

Any thoughts on this product?

Did it look like this? It's called an OptoGate, it uses a small infra-red sensor to tell if there is someone in front of the mic. Also come in models that can be placed on a table or hung off a mic stand. I haven't used it, but I'd imagine it would be usefull in corporate installs or set-and-forget gigs...

It's pretty handy for cleaning up the stage sound on live gigs where the stage volume is um... too f'in loud.

Yeah, they use a similar device for the horn players on the Letterman Show.
