Buddy Rich had the reputation of being one of the greatest drummers, and biggest assholes, ever.

From everything I've heard, both were well earned.

Got to say Buddy's tone sounds tons better to me on this video. The dead sounding black hydraulic heads on Vinnie's kit just don't do it for me.

Best regards,
Steve Berson

Couldn't agree with you more on that.

I'd like to be able to play like either of them. Even just a little bit.

Ginger Baker would argue the first point and by doing so win the second.

A 10 pt deduction for hydraulic heads to be sure. You might as well be beating on phone books.

I personally don't care if he was forcing tour buses packed with old ladies from the Masonic Home off the Palisades in a flat black Winnebago registered to Anton LeVay.

He was a most important drummer(yet) in the history of traps drumming.

And...

From what I have heard one particular guy who worked with him for YEARS... Who you got to deal with depended on lot on Buddy assessment of whom he was speaking to/at. He reportedly could also be very civil and stable to work with, and definitely had a wicked sense of humor.

One thing is for certain: He didn't suffer fools well.

BTW. Video portions of Vinnie are taken from his performance at a Buddy Rich Tribute show, performed with the "Buddy Rich Band".

Best,

SM.

That Burning for Buddy DVD was mixed by none other than Jack Joseph Puig

Vinnie rarely has a drum sound that I like. He got a lot better when he moved to gretsch drums and started to open up his sound more. But those hydraulic heads on Yamaha recording birch shells were hideous sounding to me...... however, you take Dave Weckl who used the same drums and double ply heads and he could really make them sound great.

I had the fortune of meeting Buddy when I was very young (11 yrs old). It was after one of his concerts and there was a long line up of people waiting for autographs by his tour bus.... he let each person walk on and gave each person an autograph. When it was my turn to walk on the bus, I was scared $hitless. It's hard to explain, but the guy was a lifeforce and you felt it when you were around him - it felt like he could erupt at any moment

He was kind and encouraging, even gave me a towel...but you could tell that this was one guy that you wouldn't want FOK with.

Both are great, but Buddy wins that battle. Decisively, for me, at least.

It's not even close. Vinnie has great meter and a certain kind of technical prowess there, but on that performance doing that style he utterly lacks the musicality, touch, tone, and flow of Buddy.

That Vinnie performance on the buddy rich memorial concert in 89 was not fun to see. You can clearly see how frustrated and "having a bad day" he is. You can hear some of it, but not too much. It's Vinnie

Also, I think the sound from that concert, at least the video which I have on VHS pretty much sucks. I don't know who did it, but it's .. yeah, the Vinnie clip is a good example of it. It's not fun, took the edge out of the thrilll to see it for me.

Buddy from the 60s/70s and Vinnie from 1990, are almost 2 different worlds, in terms of how drums are traditionally played. Today, we play incredibly metric and stiff compared to then, and try to make our statement to the audience by a displaying mastery of technical exercises - that few other than some drummers will understand. Vinnie's hand/foot singles marks that quite well. Buddy didn't do that. He played music for everybody, the drummers and the investment banker guys. Vinnie's way is being ergonomically aware and resourceful, Buddy don't give a f*ck .. it's showtime.
