So... we finished our move-in at a renovated warehouse space at Rolling Hills Community Church (Rolling Hills Community Church / Franklin, TN), and our first "open" event for the community of Franklin was "A Taste of Franklin" with local food vendors in the Gallery space surrounding the auditorium, and "The Usual Suspects Orchestra" doing big band music in the auditorium. Swing and foxtrot lessons were offered, and since Harry don't dance, after the basic live mix was established (A&H GL3800 through a D&B T-10 array rig), I wired up the Apogee Ensemble and threw up a pair of Gefell M296 omnis (180 degrees, 18") up about 7' and just behind the singer, to try for a bit of "ensemble" sound (no pun intended) along with the L/R output of the board mix. The mp3 is about 55% console, 45% Gefells. Saxes were individually mic'd with SM57s, the bari with a Audix D6; the lead trumpet was on a Cascade Fat Head, and a second Fat Head was in front of the brass section, up about 5' and centered 3' from the trombones, trumpets standing behind. The vocalist was on a Neumann KMS-105. The bass and electric piano were taken direct through Radial passive DIs. The drums were in a ClearSonics Iso booth (6', no top) and mic'd with an Audix Fusion kit, with a Beta 52 in the kick. It was just for fun, to see what kind of "live" sounds we could record in the room. I was pleased. Your comments are appreciated. The tune is actually titled "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening". Apologies to Hoagy Carmichael...
