Question any one know?

I have just dusted of my MS mic amp, that I was given by the director of Canford Audio, (Washington, Tyne and Wear, UK) a few years back. After inserting the new Duracell battery in, I recieved a yellow flashing Led on the Battery low indicator. I am very puzzled. It has been well looked after, never dropped, and always stored at "room temp", could it have gone faulty due to no useage this past 9 years??

hope some one has an idea as too whats wrong. I have not tested it yet, going to try it out with some "unbranded" large diapragm mics on tues PM

I would first clean the battery connect-points since they can easily become capacitive due to dielectric buildup on the surface of the metal. You can also clean all the switches and connectors, even if only by using each one a handful of times.

If that doesn't do it the job, I'd have capacitors in the power supply checked or replaced since they can degrade over time even when not used. A bad capacitor can short the battery.

Ahh - my little baby.

This unit was my idea and I got Canford Audio to design it for me - it's marketed under both the Canford and Sennheiser labels.

I would suggest giving Canford Technical a shout - but *do* check the contacts. The PP3 holder is a Sennheiser one that Sennheiser supply to Canford to make these MS boxes and the contact is via a strong spring pushing against the batters (ie: none of those horrible clip-on things that always cause problems).

I hope thsi helps.

Hi John, I sent their "techies" an email, and they said make sure the contacts are clean, and they are. What I have found is if the battery is pushed in and held in place, I can get a signal. So it seems that the lid/flap is not holding everything in place. So to avoid a big upset, I will go for the mains charger, at least that will give the unit power.
On a side note, I last used it with a pair of 414's in fig 8, it worked a treat.
I could always buy the new Tascam DR100 with built in xlr's and phantom 48.

If it's damaged, then the battery container should be replaceable.

Have you tried sticking something to the inside of the door to increase the pressure?

I have thought of that too John, but as I was let down on doing a recording a few years ago ( not this pre amp I might add), again in afore mentioned cathedral, where the signal was totaly lost till half way through the performance, where it came back on its own accord, I think with just over a week to go, the mains option should do, and get it sent in for a health check after

John, as the "father" of this device, maybe you could tell me how to tell if it on when connected to the mains, is there a led light present. I got the correct power cable from canford, and it did not fit, Maplin had a couple, but they did not light anything up, althought a flashing yellow light did show, upon putting a PP3 battery in, but as I have mentioned before, the battery holder seems to be not holding it properly
