There are ton of Raga music cds out. Some of my favorites include the sitarist Ravi Shankar, and tabla player Zakri Hussain.

Just to add, have a listen shivakumar Sharma for Santoor based raga and hariprasad Chaurasia for classical flute.

I'm not sure I understand you but here are some suggestions that may lead you to what you are looking for: 1) One of Ravi Shankar's strengths is writing for, and conducting, large ensembles of Indian instruments (he does it in the 'Concert for George'). 2) Also, Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, etc. have been involved with east/west hybrids where Indian sensibilities and western orchestras are combined. 3) I've never heard any western classical music written by a westerner exclusively that has been heavily influenced by Indian music enough for it to be obvious. |

If you're just looking for Indian music suggestions: 1) Nikhil Banerjee - awesome sitarist, all of his CDs are great. 2) Ali Akbar Khan - sarod 3) Shivkumar Sharma - santoor (kind of a hammer dulcimer) 4) Hariprasad Churasia - bansuri (flute) 5) Pandit Jasraj - vocal 6) Bhimson Joshi - vocal 7) Ravi Shankar - sitar (earlier is better) 8) Vilayat Khan - sitar |

I'd add Shahid Parvez (sitar, nephew of Vilayat Khan) and Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (Mohan Veena which is a stringed instrument looks like a guitar but sounds like a sitar).

Check out Rash Behari Data. He has a CD called Concerto for 20 Sitars that is incredible.

so far everything mentioned is north indian or hindustani music. Tou should also check out south india classical ( carnatic music) sometimes spelled karnatic. It is much more structured and rhythmicly complex than north indian music. Though after some years of studying and playing with carnatic guys I prefer the the more free flowing north indian music to listen to Bigos |

One of the best known soloists for the sarangi (very expresive viola- like instrument, with extra resonating strings that create reverberation) is Ram Narayan, with various cds available.

Great stuff being mentioned so far!!!! Since there hasn't been much Karnatic mentioned I will add Lalgudi Jayarama and his children to the list. Z. M. Dagar is a really amazing Hindustani musician. You mentioned "orchestra" so I am not sure if you are looking for stuff with full western string sections, but Bollywood soundtracks from R.D. Burman, and Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Also in the orchestral direction check out Eyvind Kang - The Yelm Sessions. (He has worked with Secret Chiefs 3, John Zorn, Bill Frisell, ect. and is not to be missed) |

There isn't really a tradition of orchestra music in India. And the term classical isn't really comparable to western usage, esp. not in the more strict sense of the classical period. Most north indian classical music isn't composed, but improvised within a traditional framework. There are composed classical pieces in the south indian (Carnatic) tradition, though. You got a number of good recommendations already, but since there is so much Indian Music out there, it would be good to know what you've heard and liked to guide you further... Daniel | |

Check out the latest release (3 Cities) from the Bombay Dub Orchestra. It was mastered by Bob Katz and has been nominated for a Grammy award.
