this weekend, i am doing a live video recording session in a huge old church, and will be tracking the audio separately. in post, i will need to sync the separate audio tracks to the video file, and do some minor editing. (i will need to remove the original audio tracks from the video recording and replace them with the good audio from Reaper.) what software (freeware??) do you recommend for this kind of basic video/audio sync'ing? thanks.

You can think about the software afterwads, the important thing is that you record in image and in audio a clap or a clapboard. Declare if you are on PC or Mac to know which free program you can use. |

i am using a PC. i did this once before to create an audition for a young ladt for "From the Top", and used a clap at the beginning of each segment for sync purposes - but then, during post when i was using Windows Moviemaker (i think - but it may have been Ulead DVD maker), after i removed the audio from the video track and patched in the real audio tracks and synced them up, i have to clip off the first few seconds of each clip to get rid of the clap - well, the stupid software would not let me clip both the video and audio at the same time, and i had to clip each piece individually, which meant i lost my sync and i had to redo it by eye and ear. i got it pretty good, but it diod make me think about getting some better software this time around.

I've synced audio and video plenty of times without claps. Just use your eyes and ears while sliding. Piece of cake. Oops, that still leaves you with software suggestions. Ummm... not sure actually. I've been using FCP, but I'd love to hear a freeware Windows suggestion too. |

Windows Movie Maker works fine for the most part. You can't do some power-user things like in Sony Vegas. However speaking of Sony Vegas you can get a 30-day free, uncrippled demo, so you should do that if you want the best possible result.

What's the video format for a start? More than one camera? Almost any video editing program should be able to mute the original video and run the audio on a separate track to replace it. Are you doing the video yourself or is someone else doing that and providing you with a finished video product to which you have to sync the audio? In other words, I think a clearer account of exactly what the scenario is would enable more targetted advice. |
