Talking Sounddevices 788T vs Nagra6

Hi,

i could learn the technical specification of nagra6 and sounddevices 788 in a german issue of professional audio.
I compared the snr´s of the micpres which were by sounddevices more than 10db better than the nagras.
Has anyone made experiences by soundcomparing?

Thank you
Paco

Nagra and Sound Devices seem to quote the specs differently - but my understanding is that the Nagra VI has the better mic. pres.

I have the 788 and NVI. In the comparative test, the sound of the pre/mic of NVI was very superior in the sonority.

I own the Nagra VI and formerly have used the 744t. I feel that the Nagras pres are better. I also feel that the Sound Devices pres are excellent and if inferior to the Nagra, should certainly not be considered lacking from a professional standard. I also like the limiters on the Nagra better.

Is there a really difference between nagra and 788t to good modular Micpres and AD´s oder for example the Metric Halo ULN8 in the same price range?

Yes there is a difference, but all 3 devices you mention are top class professional devices, although the ULN-8 that you mention, while flexible, is not the same type of product as the 788t or VI. These differences are subtle and mostly appeal to ones aesthetic preference. I would characterize the Sound Devices "sound" (based upon my experience with the 744t) is clean, neutral, pristine, and detailed. The VI has a bit more musical, relaxed nature about it, quite transparent (I do not feel the pres add a lot of "color"). The ULN-8 (based upon my experience with the ULN-2) is a top notch pre too. It has the added benefit of allowing one to add DSP distortion from mild to wild, to emulate the "color" or famous preamps or consoles. You could not get the mixing and DSP flexibility of the ULN-8 with the 788t or VI, nor are they audio interfaces, but you can't throw the ULN-8 into a bag, press a button or turn a knob to record and get take after take on a film set with the ease, convenience, and mission critical performance of the 788t or VI either.

What is your intended purpose of these devices? Are you a film location mixer or are you interested in a remote recording solution?
