Talking my first remote recording-vid

I thought I'd share this here. I borrowed my buddy's digi 001 mobile rig and did this live recording a couple days ago at Emery Theater in Cincinnati, OH. The place has amazing acoustics. You can really hear the reverb tails at 2:00 on the kick drum. It's a little long for my taste, but there weren't a whole lot of bodies there.

The setup was 8 ADAT channels coming off a Yamaha LS9 (drums, bass, backing tracks) and the rest came out of the analog outs of the LS9 into the Digi 001. Room mics out front are AKG 414 into the pre's of the 001.

I was a little skeptical of the 001 quality, but it came out okay.

That's a really nice recording (and mix for that matter)!! I'm missing just a bit more hat and toms/cymbals, but I'm listening on my inear headphones, so I may be wrong.
Also, the 2 guitars are a bit too wied open LR for my tastes but soundwise they kick ass as the rest of the sounds, and maybe the end solo/theme could be a bit more in your face.
The band really kicks ass, and I also dig the song (is there a front angle video shoot, so we can also see the singer whose back is really happening ?).

Thanks! We'll get the rest of the footage edited in a week or so. I wasn't really happy with the way the guitars came out. We might overdub them...KISS style haha.

I think it sounds great. Cound be a few things could be bumped up here and there, but overall the mix and recording is great. What mic's did you use and what part of Ohio was it? I am in Cleveland...

cincy.

I'm pretty sure they were all shures (pun intended) but not sure what kind on drums. I didn't supply the mics. I know the vox are beta 58's. 57's on gtr cabs

It looks like a Beta 56 on the rack tom.

Hey Tom...have you used the beta 56 much? I believe it is a discontinued mic isn't it?

I used to use the Beta 56 on the rack tom sometimes. Sounded ok, but I prefer a 421 or sometimes nothing at all. The 56 has a big LF bump that would be too much for some toms up close.

It's discontinued? That's surprising. I haven't used it a lot, but I have had to try to place it on a small tom enough to know that I don't like using it. It sounds good enough, but I've been sticking with the e604's lately.

It's still on the Shure site as part of the Beta line, so I don't think it's discontinued. Although, you don't see them as much these days. They used to be a very popular mic for drum vocals.

Does sound great. Sneaky question, and forgive me for asking, but... any drum sound replacement going on there? That's a glorious, and very consistent, snare sound...

Just like the hand claps. Lots of isolation in this mix, a lot more than I see in the video.

He's already stated that there are backing tracks. I'm sure the hand claps are part of that.

toms are natural, snare is 50/50 mix of natural and one of my own snare samples, kick was totally unusable and is 100% SSD Kick4

I had a quick listen and it did indeed sound high quality. The only observation I would make is that it sounded like a studio recording rather than the live event, possibly a little too cleaned up in the mix, but that's only my opinion, yours and others MMV.

Regards

Well done!
I would add a bit of the live vibe to the mix.
But, other than that it sounds awesome for your first remote recording.
You got to love those samples and such...
