Would appreciate some feedback on naming schemes. I am focusing on starting up my own location recording business to gain back some of the money that I spent on gear (yikes!), and wouldn't mind some ideas for a name. I don't have a home studio, so I would be traveling to venues to record mostly live performances, and I specialize in classical/acoustic music. I live up in DC, so I was thinking something along the lines of "Silver Spring Records", or "Silver Spring Location Recording", "Silver Spring Productions", etc., but this sounds sort of bland (dfegadthe silver spring part haha), and I'm in an uncreative mood right now . Any help appreciated!

How about just "Silver Recording Service"? It doesn't really matter what you call it, as long as you are reliable and do a good job and are entertaining to the customers.

Thread Starter | Not sure what SLRC means, so I looked it up on an acronym finder: Southern Legal Resource Center Sri Lanka Rupawahini Corporation South London Rifle Club I kind of like South London Rifle Club Recording ![]() C'mon now, that's just plain sleazy... If I combined that with "Your Place Recording" I think some people would be getting the wrong idea tutt |

This won't help you any, but I am blessed with a strange last name: Noyes. I always thought that "Sound by Noyes" would be cool. Joel is right, though, your name must just equal "good work."

| How about… Sure I can edit out all of the coughing/crying babies/slamming doors Recording Service I can set up 12 mics in 18 minutes while opera singers get in my way screeching me-ee, may-ay, mah-ah, mo-oh, mooo… Inc. Piano tuning? LLC Yes that mic has to be there… Mobile Service Yes Maestro I can record an entire symphony 4 bars at a time and then edit it together without it sounding “fake” even though you are a cheater. & associates. Seriously though… You should just pick something that has a little meaning to you personally and is fun to say so that people will remember it. Just my opinion… Robby |

I called my business Rumley Music and Audio Production, for a classical recording business, a simple, to the point, name is usually the most trusted. People started using the acronym R-MAP, which I hated at first, but it kind of stuck. |

Maybe being in DC, it would be fitting for you to advertise how your sound is completely transparent, but then in reality use the most colored gear you can find.

I would advise using your name. Aka myself RPM Audio which is Russel Phillip Murton Audio as I am trading under my own name to escape having to register a business name as I can use my own and it's industry area. For example, some nice names in my area: Billy Hyde Music, Johnson Audio. Same also use the geographic area in which they operate aka Turramurra Music. And some use generic sounding names like Sound Devices and Soundcorp all based on the industry which whilst not bad, don't really offer a personalisation as to who they are, although they are multi location businesses. So, your name + industry area is my reccommendation. As you are a freelance engineer, it will help to advertise your own name with your business name. |

| Company Name
Irrespective of what you ultimately decide to name your company, you may find that looking for a "clear" name in the following three areas might help eliminate a lot of possibilities from consideration. By "clear" name I mean something at you can use universally, without causing any confusion. The three areas you need to look at are: 1. A unique corporation name for the District of Columbia. 2. A unique name that you can trademark (think long term success). 3. An unused domain name that you can use for your website address. Ideally, you come up with a name that is identical for all three purposes. That is, it would be great (and really unconfusing) if you have a name (i.e. "IBM"), that is the name of your company, your trademark, and also your web site address. I found this to be much harder than it sounds, and if nothing else, will help eliminate a lot of names that are already being used. If you haven't checked yet, you can get basic D.C. business formation legal info at: District of Columbia: Business Resource Center: Business Planning If you are unfamiliar with doing trademark searches check out TESS at: Trademarks Finally, most big ISP's (like Go Daddy) have a domain name search mechanism that you can use to see if that great company name is available for use as your internet site name. Of course, if you come up with a killer name, but that company name is already registered, and it's already trademarked by someone else (e.g. selling fireworks), if the domain name is available, then you might want to use it and dummy up any kind of official corporate name and go with a logo that's cool but not registered.

I don't think the name matters much. We have had a lot of success with location recording... and our name doesn't really imply that we even do that.

My legal business name with the state is Superior Sound Productions. I changed it from it's original name that was based off my nickname, Howie. Ironically it came to me since I had just moved from Duluth, MN living on Lake Superior and the north shore brought a sense of peace, class, beauty....kind of what a great classical piece can. (Not the act of recording one since we know that can be a CF) After searching around, my name is competing with about 4 DJ services around the US. While I DO DJ here and there, I don't advertise those services. Howie J |
