ATI OR OTHER BOXES W/8 PRES-VS DIGI?

Curious how the ATI 8mx2s compares to other boxes with 8 pres such as the true, the Pre from digi or others? I haven't heard any of these but the utility of the ATI box is pretty interesting!
Wonder how it sounds?
Thanks
Daniel

I dunno - I've been wanting to try one since the first time it was released, and was never able to work it out. But ithe 8x2 is based on the preamps from the Paragon console.

Try this one....

CLM dynamics db800s

8 Channels
Soft limnter on each channel
Di on each channel
4 outputs on each channel---> yes thats a total of 32 outputs
M& S encoding
Didital option via ADAT and other formats

www.clmdynamics.com

I have one and have found it to be very hand and a great performer on the $ for $ basis... granted it is no neve on the colouration stakes but it has lots of gain and can even run ribbons.

Great for additional preamps on the run and for mobile gigs. I used lots with DIGI 001 ona location gig and the multiple outputs meant that i could give real time monitor mixes W/O latency.. vital in most situations IMHO

Checkout the review on Sound on Sound @ www.sospubs.co.uk

PEACE

May not be 'hi-end' or esoteric enough for some people's needs, but I am so far thrilled with my Focusrite Octopre...The gain is solid state Class A, very simple...the compression is way more than adequate...

Again, judging from some of the gear reports posted around here, the Octopre is probably pretty 'low-brow'.... but I have already gotten a lot of mileage out of mine, and have gotten several compliments from clients that are usually pretty tight lipped about things...

Talking

The ATI 8MX2 is a truly excellent piece. I've done a great deal of recording with them and everyone who's heard them was very pleased. The mixer functions are extremely handy when you need to do a remote with a small footprint. The linkability of multiple units are a big plus as well.yuktyy

I know this is sort of off my own topic but what started me thinking about this was the EQ article this spring where
Frank Filipetti was discussing all the Neves and Neumanns that he used to record Korn's drumset. Like 20+ track for drums!!?
I think He mentions that there was no compression?
Anyway I thought I try a similar thing but I can't afford to fill up my lunchbox with api pres or get the neves but figured that one of the 8x rack pres would speed up the process?
Ah but which one? If you're not bored keep 'em comin!
Thanks
Daniel

I'm real fond of my Crane Song Spider. 8 mic pres, 2-mix buss, 10 channels of A/D conversion, selectable dither and tape emulation, inserts on channels and LR buss, 2 flavors of mic pre - regular & FAT, defeatable limiting etc. etc.

rollz Scott, what other pres have you compared the Spider to?
It looks real cool but thats alot of bread right up front! I wonder if they'll make a version without the digital? This months PAR has
the spider and the ATI rack on review.
Thanks!

You could buy three ATI 8MX2s for the price of a Spider and have some money left over. It's not that the Spider isn't worth the cash, but price has much to do with what one buys.

Is the spider worth the Bread?

I did some live classical stuff over the weekend and wouldl love to have had the true sytems pres for to try out the M/S option!
So right now my goal is to try out the digi pre,the api 8mx2,
the sytek4 channel, and the true sytems 8 or 2. It would be nice to have both the api, and the true or... ok all of them!
Oh yeah the crane song spider, I am wondering how the converters are and if its worth all of that money?

Daniel,

Kooster from Record Planet Remote has 6 or 7 ATI 8mx2's in his mobile unit. He digs them much. They compliment his large frame API console nicely.

I love my ATI Pro6's multi processor mic pre's. I wish they still made them. They're like Paragon channel strips in a 1 U rack space box. I want to add two more to my arsenal of mic pre's.

Maybe a few of them will show up on eBay or somewhere, someday. That would be a very nice thing.

Steve, most of the folks on here seem to love the 8mx2, I wonder how it compares to other api pres? I'm not usually into the 4 or 8x boxes but I've been getting into more live situations and also need a few more good pres in the studio. I've been checking once a week for a used one on e-bay but there isn't much api on there. Thanks for the post!
