Talking Verbier Festival location recordings..........

Hi guys,
any of you is involved in the location recordings for the Verbier Festival a/v streaming you can watch and listen to at medici.tv web site?
I think these are very very beautiful solo piano recordings (Kissin recital is my favourite sound wise) and I'd be interested in some informations on mics setups, gear used (mics, preamps, converters, sample rate and bit depth), and anything related to the recording process.
Thank you

My partner was over there, as he is working for this company;

Memnon - A propos de

Mostly archiving works but not only.

I know he took the millenia HV 3D, schoeps MK2H and DPA indeed.

Converters must have been from Mytek.

I think it has been multitrack recorded onto pyramix.

I'll ask him more details.

Enjoying Rene Pape(my favorite "new" bass) , Quasthoff, and Terfel..

wonder why Quasthoff has to have the score in front of him? surely he has sung the role before?

Hello guys !

I was working on the Verbier Festival from 17th to 27th of July, here the setup at the "tente Médran" :

- 8 mics preamps + 8 AD converters on stage from CrockWood. AD have been bypassed on mics 1 to 4 to go directly in dCs converters (dCs 905 for main who is indeed paired DPA 4006, and dCs 904 for violins and cellos or for a solo recital configuration)

- mics preamps 9 to 16 is a set of 2X FocusRite Red + 8 AD from Mytek (new model ADDA 8x192, DSD option not present)

- Every AES output goes directly in 2 AES slots of a Sony DMX-R100 Digital desk. Then for mics 17 to 24 we use the preamps and AD of the Sony.

- Recording is made in 44.1 kHz 24 bits, general clock given by a Rosendahl Nanosync. No premix, all direct outs of the Sony sent to a Pyramix Native (with RME AES sound cards) on 24 tracks.

- Digital Reverb is a Lexicon 480 but unfortunately without the digital input/output...

- We use a Nagra V for 2 tracks master, HHB audio CD recorder for safety, and Prism Dream DA for final conversion. This Prism model is also a DD so we use it for dithering before recording the audio CD.

- Monitoring consists in a Sonosax intergrated amplifier (not such good actually !) + a pair of Bowers & Wilkins 805 Signature.

- The set of microphones is full of active booms from Schoeps (because of the presence of video of course) with generally CMC 6U preamp with MK 2, MK 2 S, MK 2H, MK4, MK 4V, MK 21 (my favorite !! ). But we use also Neumann KM 143 (KM 100 preamp + AK 43 caps), 140, 150, 184, for percussions for example...

- Happy to hear that the Kissin recital is appreciate by someone ! It's always difficult to find something interesting because of the lack of acoustic in Medran... And Kissin has so much dynamic in his playing !! Thanks Lexicon !
For this recital the DPA's have not been used because the piano was off-centered and our system does not allow us to move right or left. So we've used 2 Schoeps MK 2H on active booms.

If you need more informations do not hesitate to ask !

Cheers
Denis

Thank you Hic&Nunc for reporting back!
If I understood correctly Kissin recital was recorded with 2 Schoeps CMC6 MK2H, Crookwood preamps and dCs 905 converters at 44.1 Khz 24 bit.
Only 2 mics and a bit of Lexicon reverb...
Wonderful job! You are a real PRO!
May I ask you for some more insight on microphone tech used (AB, NOS, ORTF ecc.)?
Positioning of the mics, angle, high?
