Talking The DVD live music concert phenomenon

Why is this ship not flying by now? For years I've been waiting for DVD live concerts to become mainstream, the next great music experience for consumers, but nothing seems to happen, it just does not want to fly. Wouldn't it be great to be able to consume a large selection of live concerts in high definition? I would like to be able to just select an artist and then be able to choose what concert I want to watch in high definition, not among just one or two, but among most of his/her concerts. I mean just imagine how many great concerts that can be captured and enjoyed by people that were not present, concerts in various genres like smooth jazz, country, pop, blues, rock, r&b etc. Why are not all these amazing concerts available to us?

Any thoughts?

Because a serious DVD-production is very expensive. Simple as that.

I think that live video concerts are already relatively mainstream. I watch live concerts all the time on Ovation tv, Austin City Limits, Live stuff form Abbey Rd.

Live Nation does tons of stuff, Bonarroo

the internet is probably the biggest reason that there is not as many DVDs are being released. Who wants to pay for something when you can stream or download it for free.

My business is capturing live studio performance video and audio. Without giving up trade secrets, I can say that subjectivity (multi-cam director ego) and dealing with the regular studio recording crisis scene is just added nightmare to delivering what you want. Imagine how many decisions are made just to mix audio tracks, then multiply that with visual tracks. Cutting and editing for the final audience is who's decision?
That's why I only track it, and they pay someone else to mix, master, splice and dice. I've got a roledex of engineers looking for work. Depends on how much the artist can pay etc. So keep your name on my list if you are looking for work.

I will do the Bee Gees on spec.

The last footage I saw of them was spit polished to 90's sheeny perfection, and I thought to myself 'I would sample replace every snare to wooden thud glory, dull out those shiny keyboards, dry it all up, and make it sing on the auratones.' 70's bands never sound right with the moden live scooped thing, all snappy and bright. No bueno!

I can't imagine the density of personality issues involved in producing a dvd concert, it seems like the drama would multiply exponentially when visual thinkers clash with aural thinkers; my hat is off to you.

But everything is relative, you can always add to the price...

Hmm, thanks for the tips. I went to Ovation tv and Austin City Limits, I'm not at all excited about the experiences of the content on those sites... There might be plenty of sites like this, but the content is not very exciting.

I think you have a pretty bright future my friend. If I were you I would grab the club scene with a high definition camera before it's too late. Imagine what your work would be like: Drinking beer, meeting good people (musicians, women) and listening to concerts every night.
