I'm updating my setup and would appreciate any input. I need a mobile setup that I can use to record anything between a piano and a soloist and a large choir or a symphony orchestra (yeah, I know). I compose, play, sing and conduct and mainly need a way to archive my work so I'm not looking for a truckload of Schoeps mics but sometimes I also need to record music for media productions so an SD card recorder won't do either. I have some gear I'm going to use but I also need to get new mics, adapters, stands and such. Recording gear: My rig consists of a Macbook, MOTU 828 mk2 and API A2D. I would prefer that I could carry the whole setup at the same time so I also need to make some logistical decisions. I think I'll get an SKB XRack2 for the racks and keep the Macbook in a backpack with cables and such. This leaves one hand free for mics and stands. I'm thinking about a basic mic setup with a main stereo pair and a couple of mics to be used as spots and outriggers. I would propably use the A2D for the ORTF and the MOTU preamps for the omnis. The MOTU pres aren't great but I suppose they would suffice in this configuration. If more preamp channels would become necessary I would propably get Audient 008 ADAT and XRack3. Mics: I need to get more mics and have a couple of options in mind: 1. Beyerdynamic MC930 pair in ORTF configuration and MC910 pair as outriggers. The MC910s don't seem to be available as a matched pair and a case at the moment but I don't think that would be a problem. I could get some foam and cut a new inlay for the MC930 case so that it would hold all four mics, adapters and a stereo bar. With some luck the ORTF setup might even fit to the case as one piece. 2. My other mics are AEA R84 and AT4033, one of each. Getting the AEA R84 survival kit is tempting but then I would have to put the AEA TRP preamp somewhere and I'm not sure if running that to the MOTU converters is a good idea anyway. I could just get a second R84 to be used as a superb Blumlein pair or AB when necessary or do the same with a second AT4033 and use them with the A2D. With two R84s I'd probably use a stereo bar and the mics right next to each other instead of on top of another for convenience. I suppose the MC910s would work fine with the Audio Technicas but what would you use with the ribbons? AEA R88 for Blumlein and a second R84 for spots / outriggers would be something else but unfortunately I can't afford that at the moment. A second AT4033 would be cheaper than the pair of MC930s and a second R84 more expensive. A pair of R84s would be great for smaller ensembles such as string quartets but also very inconvenient for live gigs. 3. I haven't been able to get my hands on the Gefell M300s to make a comparison but judging from the several clips I've heard the Gefells seem like a step up from the Beyers. If money wasn't an issue I would get some Schoeps but that's way too expensive for now but the Gefells might be possible. The MC910s might still be a good choice for the omnis. Stands: How high do you usually have to get with stands when recording ensembles? I've usually managed with normal boom stands but sometimes higher would be better. That makes the stands heavier and longer which is difficult to carry with the rest of the rig. For SDCs I suppose three identical reliable stands would be the best option. In case I would get a second R84 I would need something considerably sturdier for the stereo pair. Any suggestions for stands? The three stands would need to fit into a bag and possibly a fourth stand might be useful for AB + spots configuration. The rest: Shure A27M seems like a nice option for the ORTF arrangement but it doesn't have any way to adjust the vertical angle of the whole setup, right? Will the MC930s work in ORTF with the Beyerdynamic MAV 802? With that the vertical angle would be easily adjustable. I'll probably do a couple of dedicated multicore mic cables for the ORTF. If I don't get the MC930s I will also need to get a case for the mics. Any comments or suggestions? |
