Question Sound for Film

Ok, this is not the question I typically like to ask, but here goes. I'm thinking of getting into sound for film. On location, stereo OH on a boom stand type of stuff. I'd like some direction on what I would need to get a solid capture - not Hollywood, but good. What would I need?

Laptop + DAW?
DAT Machine?
Mixer?
Stereo Mic?
Lavalier Mics?
Portable Pre-amp?

Is a budget of around 3 Grand reasonable?

Quite some threads on that topic in here. Gist:
- no laptop - film sound gets, at some point, cold or wet or both, and that's not what laptops like. Plus they have a fan you don't want to hear, and film sound can mean recording very quiet sources.

- stereo mic is optional, but you WILL need a good and reliable shotgun. Most of what you're recording on set is intended for the Center channel only. IF you do stereo, MS is preferrable as it still gives a clean on-axis Mono signal with Stereo as a controllable option.

- Lots of portable HD or CF recorders out there. SoundDevices are great enough, Nagra, Deva, and Cantar are more expensive and more great. First thing you need is reliability.

- Mixer: either a small desk, eg. Audio Developments or Sonosax - you'll need some sort of cart then - , or a portable mixer like SQN or SoundDevices (again...). You'll need a bag to carry both mixer and recorder.

- See other threads for more info.

Thanks so much. I've been digging around other threads a bit. It's a completely different animal than studio work - a little overwhelming, but also exciting.

Why not use the popular tag search function?
It will narrow down your search criteria than must other possibilities.
