Talking Gig Report: Live at Puppets Jazz Bar in Brooklyn

Howdy folks

I recorded the O'Farrill Family Quintet and the Arturo O'Farrill Quartet at Puppets Jazz Bar in Brooklyn last night. It was a really great evening with some amazing playing.

The Quintet featured Arturo on piano, his two sons: Adam on trumpet and Zack on drums, Mike Sacks on bass, and Ivan Renta on tenor sax. The Quartet featured Arturo on piano, Jim Seeley on trumpet, Jaime Affoumado on drums, and Alex Blake on bass.

Since I actually remembered my camera, I thought I'd share a few pic's I managed to snap off.

Here's the rig, one in daylight and the obligatory dark shot to show the cool lights

Puppets is in a store front space and is narrow and deep in its layout. The stage is against one wall. Here are a couple of shots of the stage from different angles (that's Jim Seeley on the trumpet in that last shot):

Because of the tight quarters, I had to be selective in my use of stands. As a result, I made good use of the UltraClamps I just bought from Steve.

Here's a shot of the piano mic'ing. I was really stoked to try the MK21's on a clamp-mounted T-bar to see if it would work under these conditions, but I did not want to risk not having the isolation I needed, so I also set up my go-to placement of 103's. The clamps are awesome for this because they don't scratch the piano, and they are strong enough to hold the bar and mic's with a little extension for height (a quick clip).

The toughest part about mixing this will be deciding which pair I like better - they both work really well.

Here are a couple of other ways the clamps saved me. I used the high-hat stand as a snare mic stand (not a great shot here, but you can see it I think).

Also, Jim Seeley likes to play with his bell up sometimes and down others, which makes it tough to capture. The second shot is a little busy, but what it shows is the 58 that the house monitors were using. On this stand I clamped a KM140 for the top (using a pop filter clamp and gooseneck) and a KMS 105 (on the UltraClamp) to capture him when he was playing "bell-down"
