It may very well depend on the style of music. I have been to a few electronic industrial shows where the keys and tracks were all hard panned. The room was long rectangular and I stood very near the right cluster.

Believe it or not, I could still hear the left side when hard panned sound effects came from the left, it was actually a very cool and unique experience to have these sounds coming from different directions. It really only works with that sort of music though.

I tend to slightly pan using different techniques depending on the venue and the act. I like to walk the room if I get a chance to get to know it better, that helps to give everyone a good mix.

I must agree with you. With todays PAs, especially a good line array in a room that shape (one that's not too wide), you should be able to hear the opposite side pretty far off center. Stereo is the way to go in most situations in the live realm. Even done in a minimalist fashion, it gives you useful options you wouldn't otherwise have. I definitely don't miss the days of being stuck with mono only systems!

I had even rock music gigs were i didn´t use any side fills because of a good line array.

Depending on the setup, the singers will have good monitoring even when they
don´t stand in front of their wedges. (of course not at the drum riser)

It worked great for stages up to 40 or 50 feet width. And the audience benefits from that as well.
