The taping community has been doing stuff like this for ages.

I think I heard my first ALD recording at least 10 years ago (assisted listening device"), though I don't remember when I first started hearing recorded monitor feeds.

The DMB stuff is somewhat legendary as there are some really funny moments with the guys talking about girls in the first few rows and such. Many of the Tool shows over the past few years were also recorded via the IEM feeds.

I remember this cat that always hung around the Garden (MSG) with a backpack with a bunch of receivers and portable recorders capturing whatever he can get.

Clapton's guitar use one of his best recorded gems.

seriously, loose the attitude. everything is cool

i used to do monitors at many many big shows. i couldnt give a rats if someone was listening to an IEM send. recording a monitor mix is not "****ing with someones shit" (as you so quaintly put it) its listening to something that is no real use to anyone but the proformer on that send

just chill out a bit man, or maybe you are one of the few monitor engineers who just cant handle the stress and turns into an idiot (ive seen it happen to many) i hope your just having a bad day, i really do

To the OP...

In this era of copyright litigation I am not sure but recording a pre recorded track off an IEM system could be seen as illegally copying copyrighted songs and may get you or others into a lot of trouble with the RIAA and record companies.

I use to go to CART auto races and listen in on the pit to car conversations which was fun to do and at some race tracks they actually posted the frequencies of the various cars. There is nothing illegal in doing this as the transmissions are not encrypted nor copyrighted and anyone with a properly tuned RF receiver can easily get the conversations. I see people doing this a most sporting events and in some cases are listening in to the wireless conversations of the coach and spotter. Again no foul as the airwaves are there and anyone with the proper equipment can monitor them. If you were to make money or to use those conversations for illegal purposes you could face some fairly stiff finds and jail time.

In Ohio it is illegal to listen in or tape phone conversations including cell phone conversations with out a court order although I know a number of people that do this with their scanner radios that specially modified. Even if they don't use the information for any profit gain the FBI and others may charge them with phone taping which carries a pretty hefty price tag and may involve jail time.

As IEMs grow in popularity it is something that will get more attention and more and more people will try and do what you are suggesting. Whether it is legal or illegal is not something the members of this forum can address but it will be addressed in a court of law and it may mean that someone has to pay for their listening in and or recording of the IEM conversations and that fine may not be something to trifle with. Currently copying a copyrighted song can get you a fine of up to $250,000.00 to $500,000.00 for each occurrence.

As with most things you should be aware of all the possibilities of ligation and the process of law before you do something that, on the surface, seems harmless and fun to do.

FWIW and YMMV

first of all, the seats around me are empty BECAUSE, as i have explained, i got to the show early.
Second, what i did was not any different from someone pulling out their cellphone and recording the whole event. IF you don't sell these recordings, who cares that you recorded it. its for personal use and not for blackmail or any other such thing. If you use a little common sense, you'll quickly catch on that all of the ideas being kicked around here on this thread are just that......IDEAS! So lets cool our jets and have a little fun with audio engineering. If you don't enjoy what you do and have a healthy sense of humor about it...... maybe you're in the wrong proffesion.
